The San Diego Food System Alliance is working to develop and maintain an equitable, healthy, and sustainable food system for the benefit of all people in San Diego County. Currently the Alliance consists of members representing a diverse cross section of the regional food system. The Alliance is not an independent organization, but rather a collaboration of organizations and individuals utilizing a collective impact model in order to effect positive change in the San Diego regional food system.Responsible for directing inclusive and comprehensive programs with a 2017 – 2018 focus on food waste reduction and food recovery to people, the top two tiers of the EPA Food Recovery Hierarchy. Leading the rollout of a county-wide food waste consumer education campaign and other food waste reduction initiatives in businesses and institutions. Identifying priorities and support for food recovery groups, identifying funding opportunities, exploring innovative financing mechanisms, developing resource site, facilitating network building, and providing updates on important legislation. Developing and managing strong partnerships with core stakeholders. Identifying outcome measures and tracking progress. Supporting Food Recovery Working Group with strategic guidance, facilitation support, and stakeholder engagement. Leading the design and execution of the annual Food Waste Solution Summit. Developing and disseminating strategic communication materials.

Developed and Expanded the Sustainability Program for Palomar Health - creating the connection between human health and the environment. Engaging staff, patients, visitors and the community in the efforts and the impacts of more sustainable actions to the health mission. Benchmarked, developed, implemented, and tracked initiatives and strategies in the areas of: Energy, Water, Waste, Purchasing, Transportation, Food & Nutrition, Gardens, Toxics Reduction, and Engagement.Outcomes from these program areas over a 6 year period at Palomar Health consistently saved the organization money, reduced negative environmental and health impacts, increased collaboration and visibility both internally as well as regionally and across the nation, and garnered national recognition for the healthcare system four years in a row for continuous improvement and environmental excellence from Practice Greenhealth. Select results include protecting human respiratory and cardiovascular health by implementing a series of energy efficiency measures and negotiating natural gas & electricity commodities, which resulted in an annual electricity demand reduction of 6 million kWh, 685 kW (that’s like taking a small hospital off the grid), and annual savings of between $750,000 - $2,000,000. Waste reduction and pollution prevention savings from recycling programs and reprocessing of medical devices totaled more than $500,000 per year, with reprocessing alone eliminating over 10,000 lbs. of waste to landfill each year. With a focus on environmental nutrition, population health, and wellness, procurement of Sustainable, Local, and Organic (SLO) food & beverage products increased to 27% of total dollars, 60% of all dollars spent on fruits and vegetables, 23% of all dollars spent on meat, and 70% of all dollars spent on beverages.

Healthy Planet, Healthy PeopleHealth Care Without Harm (HCWH) is working to “transform health care worldwide so that it reduces its environmental footprint, becomes a community anchor for sustainability, and a leader in the global movement for environmental health and justice.” In this process HCWH engages professionals in the field to share best practices, expose roadblocks, and work toward solutions together.Participated in Market Transformation Groups (MTGs) with HCWH leadership, and collaborated with other healthcare professionals from across the nation, with the intention of aligning interests and goals to achieve a greater collective impact. MTGs worked nationally on two specific collaborative efforts: Less Meat, Better Meat; and Safer Chemicals.With the enormous environmental footprint of animal agriculture today, along with the human health impacts of overconsumption of meat being one of the leading indicators of human morbidity and mortality, alignment for reducing meat consumption, while fostering a more sustainable animal agricultural system, makes sense for the healthcare industry and the food system. As a member of the Less Meat, Better Meat MTG, we worked with suppliers, processors, and consumers to reduce or eliminate the routine use of non-therapeutic antibiotics in animal husbandry as a first measure toward more sustainable production.Many of the chemicals known to cause harm to humans are registered under the State of California’s Prop 65, but as many are still used in products common to the healthcare industry, the Safer Chemicals MTG is working on supplier disclosure, metrics and tracking, as well as safer and more durable alternatives.

As a major Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) for healthcare, Novation (NKA Vizient) has been proactive in gaining professional member input in regard to sustainability principles in procurement processes, products, and services. Participated as Chair, Vice Chair, and as an active member on the Novation Environmental Advisory Group (EAG) for 5 years, which resulted in a more collaborative, transparent, and evolving sustainable procurement process at Novation and across the industry.Working collaboratively with healthcare professionals, suppliers, and distributors from across the nation, and with Novation leadership and Product Portfolio managers. As EAG members we provided guidance and input on sustainable product attributes, high-value targets, and a desired focus on select regional and local procurement opportunities. Over the course of this time, safer and more sustainable products and services became available, and at more affordable price points due to the collaborative efforts of the EAG and Novation.

As a part of the Green Business Operations Certificate Program, prepared curriculum for this course that introduces participants to the knowledge and skills necessary to select vendors and products with a reduced effect on human health and the environment. Specifically, participants consider key environmental attributes of products; how to interpret "eco-labeling" and recognize "green washing"; and how their choices can improve an organization's ability to meet environmental goals, improve employee safety and health, and reduce disposal costs. Acknowledging a changing world, the Sustainability Committee seeks to find and promote the appropriate balance between the economic, environmental, and social aspects of the community to ensure sustainability for current and future generations.In 2008 the Green Taskforce developed a Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Green Business Certification Program. During 2009 a series of supporting workshops were offered at the Chamber; and the year wrapped up with a fun Eco-Tour in November.
