I am responsible for supervising and leading a team of individuals in developing and implementing a monitoring framework for approved development Projects in Nunavut. Once Projects are approved for development, NIRB ensures Projects continue to meet ongoing regulatory and permitting requirements, environmental protection and socio-economic commitments. By completing in-person site visits and coordinating with other regulatory agencies and reviewing industry standards and expectations, the NIRB ensures Projects are operating in accordance with their Project Certificates and implements corrective recommendations if necessary. Through this role, NIRB ensures community feedback and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is collected on Projects and incorporated into the monitoring programs ensuring Projects are responding to both predicted and unforeseen impacts.

The Nunavut Impact Review Board’s (NIRB) mission is to protect and promote the well-being of the Environment and Nunavummiut through the Impact Assessment process. The NIRB was created through the Nunavut Agreement to be an independent agency responsible for providing the Government with recommendations regarding the potential impacts of proposed development projects, whether or not those Projects should be permitted, and if so, under what terms and conditions.As a Technical Advisor, I work with a team of talented professionals to assess both the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of proposed major projects in Nunavut. Our team also refines and implements the post-impact assessment monitoring program to ensure that Proponents are operating within the bounds of their Project Certificates. Information gained through firsthand experiences on-site and through research of technical documents are summarized and presented to the Board with recommendations in a concise and intelligible manner. Board staff are responsible for facilitating and attending Public meetings, technical Workshops and Public Hearings, allowing subject matter experts, regulators and interested parties an opportunity to discuss concerns regarding the Proposal.

As Board Members for the Ikaluktutiak District Education Authority, we are responsible for reviewing and managing long-term planning for the Elementary and High School in Cambridge Bay, NU. We oversee the hiring of Administrators and Teachers, manage the operating budgets of both schools for operations, and related program funding as well as manage the implementation of school procedures in relation to the required curriculum and Education Act. As a Board, we are also responsible for advocating fo the needs of our local schools and students in the context of Nunavuts education policies to the Government of Nunavut.

Working for the Conservation Authority, I was able to use my knowledge of conservation and ecological interactions to solve ongoing conservation challenges in my local community. Through my time here, my major assignment was to research and develop a protocol for estimating geese populations and the phosphorous load in the lake that was attributable to them. Further, I was responsible for making recommendations on the likelihood that this phosphorous input was contributing to chronic algal blooms in the lake.
