About Barkha Singh

Biomedical researcher with expertise in nanotechnology, biomaterials, and regenerative medicine. My PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay focused on developing plasmonic nanoconstructs for breast cancer theranostics, combining nanomaterials, targeted therapies, and in vivo evaluations. I was honored with the Naik and Rastogi Award for Excellence in PhD Research and have published in leading journals such as ACS AMI, RSC Nanoscale, ACS Applied Biomaterials, Carbon, and Wiley Advanced Therapeutics. I also hold eight Indian patents for novel nanoconstruct designs and synthesis methods.I served as Principal Investigator for a BIRAC SITARE-funded project on rapid bilirubin detection using cationic multifluorescent carbon quantum dots, successfully completing the project in 2023.I have collaborated with leading global institutions, including GICAN, University of Newcastle, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, USA, and Aston Materials Centre, UK. In India, I work with TATA Steel R&D on carbon dots for cancer detection, VIT on nanocomposite toxicity for bone implants, and MEMS, IIT Bombay on MoS₂ quantum dots for sensing and bio-imaging. Additionally, I partner with NIRRH for toxicity studies in Wistar rats and ACTREC for evaluating nanoparticle photothermal efficacy and toxicity.Currently, I lead a biomaterials team at the University of Newcastle, Australia, focusing on ECM-derived hydrogels for organoid growth and vaginal regeneration. My research aims to understand how the viscoelasticity of extracellular matrix-derived biomaterials influences cellular behavior and cancer progression, with a special focus on uterine cancer.My technical skills include the synthesis and characterization of various multi-functional nanomaterials, including 2D materials ( MXene, WS₂ nanosheets, graphene), WS₂ quantum dots, carbon dots, graphene quantum dots, Gold nanoshells, silica nanoparticles, liposomes, and polymeric nanoparticles I have hands-on training in operating advanced equipment such as electron microscopes, XRD, AFM, XPS, and fluorescence microscopes. My practical experience spans working with mice organs and blood, conducting cell microscopy, and culturing various cell lines (fibroblast, cancer, immune cells, and red blood cells). I also perform cellular assays such as cellular uptake, viability, cell cycle analysis, apoptosis, and ROS assays. Additionally, I specialize in organoid development and optimization, hydrogel synthesis and characterization, and scaffold production for various bio-applications.
