An award winning writer with hundreds of hours of television drama to his credit, Barry Appleton was the principal writer on the long running and highly successful Thames Television police series The Bill. He has over sixty episodes to his name, including most of the original one hour episodes. During this time he was also commissioned to write a number of three hour TV films for Scottish Television’s series Taggart. His pedigree spans most of the popular crime and spy series in the 80s and 90s, such as Cats Eyes, Boon, Mr Palfrey of Westminster and many others. In 1993 he wrote Dark Secret, the Christmas Special for Yorkshire Television’s Circle of Deceit. In 1993, Barry won the Macallan award for Best Original Drama Serial for Taggart and was represented by William Morris for a number of years. Wishing to leave at the top and escape to the sun, Barry retired early to live in Cyprus where he wrote a number of plays for local theatres. He came out of retirement to write ‘Running Scared’, a screenplay for Town Film Co (Greece), in association with AB Seahorse Films (Cyprus), that won a highly competitive EU grant.
