I am an international lawyer focusing on international investment treaty arbitration, international trade, and international economic law. I have been fortunate to be a pioneer in addressing the contemporary role of international law within the regulatory environment. I have also worked extensively with the government: both as an official and as an advisor.The failure to provide regulatory fairness prominently figures in many of the disputes where I act as counsel. I also work to address questions about discrimination, unfair preferences and improper interferences with property. I am co-director of the New York Law School Center for International Law, where I am a Distinguished Senior Fellow and Adjunct Professor. I am a frequent lecturer on international public law and international investment law at conferences and universities in the US, Canada and Europe.I am admitted to practice law in the State of New York, the District of Columbia, the US Court of International Trade and the Province of Ontario, Canada. I appear regularly as lead counsel before investor-state arbitration tribunals. I deeply value public discussion of issues and participate in frequent public discussions and media interviews about international law, trade and economic issues. I authored many publications about international investment treaties, including books on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). I am also very involved with the International Arbitration Committee of the American Bar Association's International Law Section.I am engaged in philanthropic activities related to the environment and sustainability in urban public transit as well as a longstanding philanthropic commitment to the preservation and promotion of the arts and culture, especially with respect to aboriginal arts and peoples in Canada.
