  • Alcon, A Novartis Company
    Senior Engineer
    Alcon, A Novartis Company Aug 2009 - Nov 2015
    Lake Forest, Ca
    • A dynamic and prolific contributor to the R&D team. Considered one of the “key” engineers that solves extremely difficult and intractable product development problems with a creative and focused approach.• Designed a consumable micro-volume injector for sub-retinal injections. This device provides surgeons the ability to deliver gene, stem cell and sub-retinal drug therapies. The device is capable of ultra-precise and repeatable nano-scale volumetric fluid delivery. The innovative design was intelligently developed to meet consumable device cost objectives and is completely compatible with the current surgical system platform.• Designed a consumable scanning OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) probe for improved visualization during vitro-retinal surgery. The device provides surgeons with the unprecedented ability to detect retinal detachments and tears, and vitreous visualization throughout the entire posterior segment of the eye in an active surgical environment. The design employed micro optic components, fiber optics and a clever flexure design to perform optical scanning to micron precision.• In a focused and determined effort to meet project milestones for a suite of new illuminated surgical instruments, an ambitious set of new concepts were proposed, analyzed and tested in a very short period of time. Novel fiber optic solutions with refractive and reflective properties to properly direct the illumination were successfully developed. Unique optical and metallic coatings were developed to provide effective illumination properties. Material surface finishes were evaluated for optimal performance. Extremely difficult spatial constraints for integrating the components were overcome. The design was tested and validated for reliability and manufacturability. The candidate proposed the solutions, rallied the team with a new sense of esprit de corps, and helped direct the efforts to a very successful design conclusion.
  • Cymer
    Senior Engineer
    Cymer Jan 2005 - Aug 2009
    Rancho Bernardo, Ca
    • Designed a micro-droplet delivery system for EUV (extreme UV) light source. The system comprised servo motor steering, nozzle, pressurized reservoir, refractory metal thermal barriers, and temperature controlled heating. Design activities included force and kinematic analysis, droplet trajectories and stress analysis for the high temperature / pressure components. • Analyzed and problem solved an existing high velocity micro-droplet receiving module. The module was analyzed for convective heat transfer, conduction and radiation to the internal high vacuum chamber. The study also included CFD analysis (directed activities) to optimize heat transfer. • Designed a piezo actuator nanopositioning system for the next generation micro-droplet steering system. The design included piezo actuators mounted with a flexure pivot. Range of motion, forces and required preloads were studied.• Lead the design of a water cooled thermal management system that enabled the development of next generation excimer lasers. Flow and temperature dynamics were analyzed and tested for each of the water-cooled modules. A variably controlled pump and chiller system were implemented for the most powerful excimer laser system.• Optimized air flow dynamics and convective heat transfer for cooling high power electrical modules. The enclosed environment had the additional requirement of maintaining sufficient negative static pressure to contain hazardous process gas. • Design and tested high fluence beam blocks. Studied material properties, ray tracing, laser power, thermal FEA, and purge gas. The test setup included optic arrangements to simulate high fluences, power meters, photo diodes and digital UV camera. • Performed fastener strength of materials analysis for structural restraints mandated by industry standards.• Studied purge gas flow rates and extended gas purifier life, providing cost savings. • Performed tolerance stack-up analysis of assemblies to ensure proper component fit.
  • Robodesign International, Inc.
    Mechanical Engineer
Robodesign International, Inc. Jan 2003 - Aug 2004
    Carlsbad, Ca
    • Developed a drug storage and retrieval system. Designed large assemblies that incorporated pneumatic and servo motor controlled automation that interfaced with electrical and software controls. The pneumatic system included distribution manifolds, pressure and flow control, and cylinder actuators. The motor torque and speed was controlled via PID motor controller.• Designed fluid mixing and positive displacement drug delivery system. The mixing system was presented as an urgent challenge by the president to the entire company. The candidate volunteered for the challenge and created a novel solution given the extremely tight space constraints and existing interfaces.• Designed in a team effort an environmentally controlled automated DNA testing system for DARPA. The system included conveyorized movement of pallets between stations, HEPA filtration in a cascaded high pressure environment, and biohazard disposal compartments.• Designed water-resistant vision system for reading product labels and determining fill levels. Exceeded tight development time and sensitive cost requirements.• Very strong design experience designing complex assemblies. Capable of maximizing the power and efficiency of Solidworks by fully utilizing the features and functionality through years of experience.• Implemented stringent FDA and ISO requirements during the design and development of automated equipment for pharmaceutical applications. Due to high standards of documentation, the candidate was selected to present material to FDA auditors.• Engaged in direct communications with customers, determining their requirements and translating them into engineering solutions.• Excellent knowledge of the mechanical, electrical and software disciplines, and the experience to integrate them into machine design.
  • Asymtek
    Mechanical Engineer
    Asymtek Sep 2000 - Sep 2002
    Carlsbad, Ca
    • Directed the design, development and assembly of custom fixtures for all product lines within the factory. Interfaced with customers to determine their needs, directed a design team to meet these needs, and coordinated the assembly, shipment and documentation.• Designed thermal modules for heating chip substrates to enhance fluid dispensing for encapsulation. The temperature ramp and dwell times had to be tightly controlled for optimum performance via PID programmed temperature controller. • Developed vacuum delivery systems for maintaining chip substrate position during the dispense process. Key features include defining vacuum generator capacity, orifice sizing to maintain proper vacuum levels, and valve control to allocate vacuum in the sequence needed by the system.• Developed a sophisticated infrared thermal feedback control system for fixture operation. This system enabled customers greater flexibility for thermal sensing of their product during the manufacturing process. • Developed fixture designs that yielded a tremendous improvement in turn-around time from six weeks to two weeks. The fixtures had been the weak link in complete product delivery to the customer, and these improvements eliminated this impediment.• Created standardized design templates in Solidworks that improved design time from 3-4 days to less than a day. These templates also included detailed, step-by-step instructions that included all pertinent design rules for ease of use and training, and design integrity. Created and championed a process to streamline the design, development and assembly that brought the factory under a standard design process and interoperability between platforms.
  • Everett Charles Technologies
    Research And Development Engineer
Everett Charles Technologies Oct 1998 - Sep 2000
    Pomona, Ca
    • Designed, prototyped and brought to production the ScanMan. This was an aggressive five-month engineering campaign that positioned Everett Charles Technologies to be the first and only company in the market place with a high-speed test system that offered complete electrical test of fine pitch BGA and flip-chip substrates.• Project managed and engineered the automated sub-system for ScanMan, providing customers with completely operator-free batch testing of product in high volume. Capabilities include pass-fail sorting, product marking and uninterrupted tray load and unload.• Product managed and engineered a customizable fixturing system that improved test times by 24% and reduced fixture build time by 75%. This system utilized an interactive software application, and standardized kits and sub-components to create fixtures for individual chip packages. Test fixtures may be produced in single and multi-up configurations, and have adjustable tooling capabilities.• Actively engaged with customers in a system-wide quality improvement process that has yielded 99% first-pass test accuracies, and generated additional sales.• Implemented a direct, qualitative improvement system between R&D and the manufacturing floor that brought the ScanMan test system to a level of product maturity that exceeds older product lines that have been in existence for more than five years.
