We contribute to the production of ever smarter and smaller electronics, while at the same time pushing the boundaries of our fundamental insight into the workings of nature.

Friction is responsible for about 1/3 of the world energy consumption. But what exactly happens when objects touch and slide over each other? The human body is a beautiful example of a self-assembled system; without human intervention the building blocks of the body organize themselves into complex patterns and structures. In my MSc research project I contributed to the analysis of self-assembly experiments conducted on the international space station ISS. My results were published in two international journals.

Many solids and liquids can be modelled as a collection of hard spheres that attract each other. In my BSc research projcet I wrote and applied a computer program (1000 lines, Matlab) that quantifies the local structure at the solid-liquid interface in an experimental hard sphere system. The results were published in the high-impact scientific journal Advanced Materials.
