After deepening my expertise on modelling and algorithmics I broadened my horizon to discover new application domains for the technology that I’ve developed. This quest resulted in a wide variety of applications ranging from healthcare, robotics, renewable energy, … to mechatronics. I founded a research group on data mining and machine learning. Acquiring funding for managing 5 doctoral students was a must-do. Aside from technical/scientific guidance, project administration / reporting was one of my daily tasks.Despite my research ambitions, lecturing was my second passion. Although theory still is one of the foundations of high-quality education, I tried to bring theory closer to practice by offering several industry-related Master thesis proposals, new hardware for practical training, etc. My efforts were positively evaluated by tomorrow's engineers several years in a row encouraging me to go beyond. As a lecturer I was offered to go to Ibague (Colombia) teaching courses on real-time systems.

After graduating I wanted to deepen my knowledge on algorithmic modelling while avoiding to end up in a glass house. I succeeded in finding a mentor having strong relations with industry. Although my Ph.D. was rather theoretical, it didn’t take much time to apply my results onto practical use cases (see my next job description at Ghent University). Travelling, presenting your research results but also exchanging ideas, culture, … was part of my job.As an assistant you’re not privileged to work on your Ph.D. during 100% of your time. Already from the beginning I organized practical training for engineers and computer scientists. Communication skills were quickly acquired continuously trained.I was member of several boards (department board, educational program boards) and work groups (primarily related to educational training).

In higher education the era of pen, paper and PowerPoint has long gone. Keeping students attention and making your lectures look more appealing requires the combination of different 'new' media. As multimedia advisor I was continuously looking for new technologies such as whiteboards, smart pens, integrating of learning paths, video, screencasting, etc. Specifically, distance learning was one of the core competences of the Institute for continuing education (IVPV). Long before distance learning became popular, IVPV was already broadcasting lectures and even launched a new educational program entirely based on distance learning.Together with the IVPV director and team we evaluated the feasibility of creating a separate business unit which specialized in screencasting and video screening. Although pioneering from a technological point-of-view, budget restrictions and Ghent University policy interfered with our ambitions.
