Joined a small company that has products in the DevOps space to automate and accelerate software build, test, deploy and release processes.The original goals were:● Implement horizontal scalability using Zookeeper, Curator, JGroups. ● Implement a new product to allow customers 'contineous delivery' of the product. This is an extension to the 'contineous integration' and allows the user to ensure that every change to a system is releasable and repeatable.● Longer term would be to refactor the existing Spring based product into a JEE application and be more 'standardized'.Unfortunately after a year of struggling, the company decided to close the Fort Collins office and to let go of the employees working there.Over the past year I was able to accomplish the following:● Balanced being a principal software engineer, people and office manager.● Worked out bugs in both the front end (GWT based UI) and back-end of their early delivery of the CD offering which was then successfully delivered to a OEM partner.● Suggested the use of HornetQ as the JMS bus for the scalability offering● Reworked the CD solution to now become an integral part of the core product including modelling using Hibernate, re-using the Spring framework● Introduce Agile to their work place which was executed successfully locally in the Fort Collins office● Insisted and hammered on having green builds.● Some success in awareness that contineous integration means a developer needs quick turn-around when committing code.● Replaced some of the perl based integration tests with java based JUnit tests using the maven failsafe and cargo plugins that allowed testing of the war file against a deployed Jetty and/or Tomcat instance.● Joined the HQ team remotely because of attrition and we were able to get out a release of the new CD offering in less than a year.● Spent 70% of the time hands-on programming, the rest of the time introducing new architectural principles and Agile based processes.

A new push from within HP to use open source software instead of internally written libraries etc, I led the investigation to investigate and replace what we had used before with hibernate.My recommendation (and acceptance) was to move to a J2E framework using EJB3 and the JBoss Application Server. I was heavily involved in leading the effort to move the product to this new framework including creating and leading internal training on the use of EJB3, Hibernate and JBoss.At the same time we were starting to use the Agile methodology to manage the software development. This included continuous training of the engineers and management staff since they were inclined to map their current waterfall methodology processes into Agile and call it good.My team, including 3 engineers were the driving force behind all of this and after one year two of the engineers were promoted to technical leads. We are still responsible for the modeling and the correct use of EJB3 technology and have code-read and re-written other components to be in line with these technologies.Since we are the core of the product there is a strong emphasis on quality, leading to over 90% Junit converage and the implementation of a system test framework that was adapted by other component teams. This led to a component that has the lowest defect rate in the product line. We also implemented a acceptance test framework that leads to freeing up testers to test new features instead of spending a lot of time having to re-test for compatibilty between product releases.Worked on a mib browser and worked together with a team in France to define and implement interfaces between their telecom management product (TeMIP) and our IP network management software based on web services.Handed over that work to other leads after initial prototyping and implementation.
