After being instrumental in successful delivery of the GSA Conexus program I joined to another project that is rewriting the FEMA NFIP application using Spring Boot.Be a lead to a newly created team taking ownership of existing code base.Introducing rest in a green field micro service including hateos.Upgraded spring boot version of all microservices from 1.5 to latest.Refactored existing 'micro' services to actually be more 'micro'.Refactored existing services to be more rest like and at least be more consistent.Helped junior developers with setup of new project using mavenSupport the devops team in migrating from a monolithic build to more component based builds.Same position/job as with Heartland. This transformation will take multiple years but the team has made remarkable progress in the past year and went from a 'unit test, what is that? to over 40% coverage (and growing rapidly) and from a build on someone's laptop to a central build server with continuous integration, code reviews, integration tests etc.

Joined a small company that has products in the DevOps space to automate and accelerate software build, test, deploy and release processes.The original goals were:● Implement horizontal scalability using Zookeeper, Curator, JGroups. ● Implement a new product to allow customers 'contineous delivery' of the product. This is an extension to the 'contineous integration' and allows the user to ensure that every change to a system is releasable and repeatable.● Longer term would be to refactor the existing Spring based product into a JEE application and be more 'standardized'.Unfortunately after a year of struggling, the company decided to close the Fort Collins office and to let go of the employees working there.Over the past year I was able to accomplish the following:● Balanced being a principal software engineer, people and office manager.● Worked out bugs in both the front end (GWT based UI) and back-end of their early delivery of the CD offering which was then successfully delivered to a OEM partner.● Suggested the use of HornetQ as the JMS bus for the scalability offering● Reworked the CD solution to now become an integral part of the core product including modelling using Hibernate, re-using the Spring framework● Introduce Agile to their work place which was executed successfully locally in the Fort Collins office● Insisted and hammered on having green builds.● Some success in awareness that contineous integration means a developer needs quick turn-around when committing code.● Replaced some of the perl based integration tests with java based JUnit tests using the maven failsafe and cargo plugins that allowed testing of the war file against a deployed Jetty and/or Tomcat instance.● Joined the HQ team remotely because of attrition and we were able to get out a release of the new CD offering in less than a year.● Spent 70% of the time hands-on programming, the rest of the time introducing new architectural principles and Agile based processes.

Joined a team that integrates with Network Node Manager (NNM, previous project see below) and is responsible for the Performance Management and reporting.This involves handling loads of data and provide reporting tools to display this data in different formats. This add-on is internally using a product called Cognos and has a lot of perl code and some servlet and javascript code around that.My first goal was to help the team and introduce them to concepts like:● writing clean, testable code● test driven development● up their java expertise● Contineous integration● OO concepts● maven and other build tools● agile developmentThis resulted in acceptance by the team to have:● Perl Unit tests● Java JUnit tests● System smoke test running daily● Improvements in writing exit documentation, scrum, sprint, sprint reviews.For me personally I have been busy with:● Refactoring the existing UI to look and feel the same as the NNM UI using DOJO, jQuery and javascript● Writing of new servlets and abstract away database access and access to Cognos● Refactoring of existing servlet into smaller and testable classes.● Transform existing java code into maven modules● Setup contineous integration for Java code using Hudson● Refactor existing Perl code● Investigate and introduce a rest based architecture for some of the new features of the upcoming release. Because of possible re-use of work done in my previous NNM project and future requirements the rest based architecture will be based on RESTEasy and actually the whole jBoss Application Server will be installed and used for this.● Investigate the use of open source products (Birt, Jasper) instead of commercial product.

Slick (Solution in a click) is an initiative to simplify solutions POC for presales and helps to quickly install and run an out of the box configuration of several NMC products that are integrated together. A new push from within HP to use open source software instead of internally written libraries etc, I led the investigation to investigate and replace what we had used before with hibernate.My recommendation (and acceptance) was to move to a J2E framework using EJB3 and the JBoss Application Server. I was heavily involved in leading the effort to move the product to this new framework including creating and leading internal training on the use of EJB3, Hibernate and JBoss.At the same time we were starting to use the Agile methodology to manage the software development. This included continuous training of the engineers and management staff since they were inclined to map their current waterfall methodology processes into Agile and call it good.My team, including 3 engineers were the driving force behind all of this and after one year two of the engineers were promoted to technical leads. We are still responsible for the modeling and the correct use of EJB3 technology and have code-read and re-written other components to be in line with these technologies.Since we are the core of the product there is a strong emphasis on quality, leading to over 90% Junit converage and the implementation of a system test framework that was adapted by other component teams. This led to a component that has the lowest defect rate in the product line. We also implemented a acceptance test framework that leads to freeing up testers to test new features instead of spending a lot of time having to re-test for compatibilty between product releases.Worked on a mib browser and worked together with a team in France to define and implement interfaces between their telecom management product (TeMIP) and our IP network management software based on web services.Handed over that work to other leads after initial prototyping and implementation.

There was a push within HP to develop products based on a 'Common Management Environment' where certain base functionalities were developed in house and used by the products. One of those was an ORM (think hibernate with a data model driven UI on top) and implemented a JMS service alongside this. Trained several teams within the US on the new platform.Worked on identifying and designing a 'common operator console' to be used by multiple products within HP.Acted as the liason between the Netherlands, Germany and Fort Collins teams to lead the shift from a C++ Corba based product line to a Java, RMI one.Moved to the Network Node Manager team to help them move to the new platform and was responsible designing the distribution architecture working with the marketing team and architects of other components to reach a consensus it.Was responsible for the topology model of the product including modeling and implementation. Designed a test framework around this that was adapted by other components as well to improve their code base.

Worked on telecom management software based on a corba, C++ platform.Responsible for the Corba Unified Service and worked on interoperability between Orbix and Orbplus.Worked with IONA on adding the CDR encapsulation and did the IOP testing around this.Worked on performance testing and designed/implemented improvements.Moved to a different position within the team and became the UI architect for the product. in that position I reworked the existing code, resulting in an over 50% reduction in executable size, stack trace dumps instead of core dumps, isolation of the GUI component from the rest of the product so tests could be written.Independently, worked with iLog on their TGF beta to identify missing API's etc, trained customers in the US and Europe on the new product and UI.
