Field Technician

Markham, Ontario, Canada

SCS is a privately owned firm that provides consulting services for a wide variety of civil infrastructure projects. The company has expertise in the areas of project management, site planning, design, field inspections, stormwater management, and cost management. As a field technician, I was part of the company’s division dedicated to contract administration. The company’s clients outsourced the labour of quality control inspection, cost control, and project management to my division. My main objective was to be the eyes and ears of the senior project managers and designers in my firm by monitoring and inspecting the construction process during its various phases. After a few months of experience, I was entrusted with being the main point of contact for my team’s senior project manager on two subdivision developments, where I was required to regularly coordinate with contractors, city inspectors, and other consultants to ensure that construction was meeting quality control standards and progressing in a timely manner. Through this position, I learned about the business of civil infrastructure from the private sector side, but also about the industry’s complex structure and hierarchy of labour with its diverse range of expertise. It was a great opportunity to see the principles of civil engineering applied in a real-world context.

Traffic Technician Associate

Barrie, Ontario

During my tenure as a city employee, I worked for the Traffic & Parking Department, which is part of a larger division that is responsible for the oversight and management of the city’s entire civil infrastructure.I worked in collaboration with the department’s senior technologists by assisting them in the areas of administration, consulting, and quality control. On the administrative side, I prepared various documents for city council and the public in an attempt to kickstart future maintenance/rehabilitation projects; I was also responsible for coordinating with various specialists both during the preparation stages of these projects and while work was in progress. The consulting work in my position involved composing the city’s annual traffic collision report, in addition to reviewing traffic and parking system designs submitted to my department for approval. This kind of work enabled me to apply my analytical thinking skills. Quality control involved routine check-ups on the work done by contractors on existing infrastructure to ensure the latter was functional and up-to-date. In my job, I learned a lot about the role government plays in the management and business of civil infrastructure.

Sales & Social Media Manager

Pop Heart

Midland, Ontario

This is a small family business that produces gourmet desserts with fresh, locally grown, organic ingredients, and is representative of the local food movement.I joined the business during its start-up phase to help the owner with running everyday operations. These operations involved the preparation and packaging of food products, meeting with local retailers, reaching out to food suppliers, and managing the company’s social media presence. I was also involved with maintaining a company presence at local events by assisting the owner with running a company vendor at various weekend markets and summer festivals. The experience provided me with a window into how a small business is run and all the different types of problems and bodies of knowledge a business owner must tap into in order to keep a business running.

Sales Representative & Labourer

Midland, Ontario

The company provides university and college students with ambitions in entrepreneurship an opportunity to start their own small franchises under the College-Pro brand. The franchises are made up of labour teams that offer both window cleaning and painting services for home maintenance. As a team member, my primary responsibility was to spear-head sales efforts, which consisted mostly of door-to-door sales, followed by cold-calling (both new and old customers) and some flyer distribution. Occasionally, I would join the labour crew for those jobs that required extra hands, such as big waterfront properties that have a few too many windows. Delivering sales pitches to strangers, either in person or over the phone, provided the best outlet for overcoming approach anxiety. Furthermore, the job improved my time management skills and strengthened my habit of taking initiative; it made me responsible for determining how many sales pitches I would make in a day, which areas to target, and what to include in my sales pitches for optimal results.
