Barbara Todd’s interdisciplinary art works marry a minimalist aesthetic to a poetic and politicized sensibility. Her “Security Blankets” have been exhibited widely. Most notably, Barbara Todd : Security Blankets, organized by the Southern Alberta Art Gallery in 1992, toured Canada for three years. These quilts were also included in Subversive Craft, the List Visual arts Center, MIT, 1993. In the same year Todd moved to Montreal where she began a series of dramatic, black-on-blue quilts based on dreams, poetry and children’s drawings. This work culminated in the installation A Bed is a Boat shown at Oboro Gallery, Montreal (1996), the Library and Gallery, Cambridge (ON)(1997) and the Museum for Textiles, Toronto (1998). In 2009 her work …all your troubles fall away was selected to receive the Grand Prize for the Hudson Mohawk Annual in Albany, New York, with Matthew Higgs, Curator.Todd’s public and private commissions include works in fabric, steel and colored and sandblasted glass. Healing Garden (2008) is a 34meter long multi layered, lighted glass integrated art work for Sacred Heart Hospital in Montreal. Of this work, the designing architect, Benoit Laforest said: “It is truly magnificent. Rarely have I had such satisfaction in the presence of any public artwork. The installation improves and enlivens the space enormously.” She is currently working on "Many Little Plans" for the Toronto Transit Commission.Born in Ontario, Canada, Todd studied fine art and art history at the University of Guelph. In 1981, she moved to the Alberta Rocky Mountains, where she lived and worked at the Banff Centre for the Arts for the next decade. She lived in Montreal for the next decade before moving to Upstate New York.For the next two decades Todd divided her time between Montreal, where she continued to teach at Concordia University, and her studio and family in Troy, New York, where she taught weaving at Emma Willard School.Specialties: 2024 - Exhibits her work "Bayeux Redacted" at Contextile Biennale of Contemporary Textile Art in Guimaraes, Portugal in the context of Canada as invited country.
