With Dr. Erin Baines in the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, assessed the need for and parameters of a Canadian research network grappling with the evolution of the Women, Peace & Security agenda and children ‘born of war.’Reviewed and edited research papers for submission to publication and helped form grant proposals.

Senegal

- Promoted the adoption of sustainable agriculture technologies amongst Senegalese farmers and gardeners through small group and individual trainings to increase the resiliency of Senegal’s agricultural system and to positively impact community food security.- Wrote USAID Small Project Assistance grant to fund the creation of a women’s garden in Mbolo Birane, providing a public gardening space for 40 women and their families, and increasing food security and economic opportunity in the community.- Assisted in coordination of the Podor Department Girls Camp, in which 30 middle school girls selected from the area received education on the environment, women’s health, commerce, and future planning.- Accompanied a Senegalese counterpart to the Ndioum Gender Champions Workshop for sessions on gender concepts within a Pulaar cultural context, and on creating a comprehensive community action plan to address gender inequality in Mbolo Birane.- Executed disbursement of the Michelle Sylvester Scholarship to fund school fees and supplies for nine female middle school students in Mbolo Birane (students selected by the headmaster).- Conducted all formal and informal work in Mbolo Birane in the Pulaar language, having achieved Advanced Proficiency (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Proficiency Scale).- Served as Work Zone Coordinator for the Department of Podor, organizing meetings and cross-sectoral work amongst volunteers in the region and liaising with Peace Corps staff on behalf of volunteers.- Selected as a member of the DREAM Team to attend workshops on project design, monitoring, reporting and evaluation, and to disseminate the information to other volunteers.

- Assisted refugees and asylees from Central Africa, Syria, Afghanistan, and Cuba in job placements, application and interviewing processes, and arranging work transportation.- Liaised with employers and potential employers of refugees, navigating linguistic and cultural differences.

Fulfilled 150-hour internship as part of University of Kentucky degree program.- Built a qualitative audit tool to assess compliance with Inyathelo’s Independent Code for Civil Society Organizations.- Advocated to members of South African Parliament for enforcement of the Lotteries Act, diverting promised funding to local development organizations.- Managed database of Civil Society Organizations, collecting up-to-date contact information via phone and email.- Assisted the “Beyond Expectations Environmental Project” in teaching environmental science to children in Khayelitsha and Gugulethu townships.
