Stories that have been produced on Wattpad have gone on to become commercially successful films and television series distributed on services such as Netflix and Hulu. My role at Wattpad is to lead the engineering and data teams, partnering closely with product, design, marketing, and our content and community teams, to deliver exceptional, well-crafted experiences to our users.

CrowdRiff is a travel technology company whose flagship SaaS product provides travel and tourism brands with the ability to interface with and acquire content from social users engaging with their brand and their media partners, with the ultimate goal of changing how travellers see and explore the world. My role at CrowdRiff was to lead the engineering team to success, and to sustainably build and scale the team and its processes. My work largely revolved around re-architecting the performance management, compensation and hiring processes, building career ladders, hiring exceptional and passionate new team members, building people management skillsets and practices within the team, organizational structure and design, and iterating on team processes and standards. Some of my other work related to helping define and flush out a technical strategy with the team's principal engineer, and to broadly communicate and advocate on the team's behalf.

I oversaw technical strategy and people management for our Content Organization, a group of teams responsible for building and evolving all of the systems which ingest, process, curate, and serve the fundamental building blocks of our products: item, coupon and flyer data. We produce production-ready data at scale, we automate, and we improve. Some of the things I was most proud of in this role: - Oversaw multiple technical teams which successfully delivered on the largest operational project in Flipp’s history up to that time, completely redefining how flyers are processed and surfaced to customers, which included cross-functional work and alignment between marketing, sales, operations, overseas data entry teams, engineering, product and delivery - Spearheaded the formation of the first ever machine learning team inside of the Content Organization based on the outcome of a hackathon, with the mission to reduce manual workload in processing flyers; small team delivered a solution to production that served to replace the need for manual drawing of boxes around items for the majority of flyers within four months - Part of a broader cross-functional Content Leadership team including leadership representation from operations, delivery, product, and design, responsible for strategizing and planning longer-term initiatives for over 150 across departments - Worked with teams to prioritize technical debt and to plan and execute on a longer-term technical strategy of decomposing components of our largest legacy monolith into microservices - Worked with outsourcing partners to plan the hand-off of repetitive work, as well as system maintenance and iteration of some of our legacy systems, to enable our internal teams to focus on higher-level, challenging work

Helped lead, design and maintain many systems at production scale, most consumer-facing or partner-facing, all of which communicated together to form the coupons ecosystem at Flipp, serving millions of users daily.Also managed teams and lead the delivery of several other projects: - a system that determined which aisle at users' local stores contained the items in a user's shopping list (large data gathering and classifying project) - a system which translates photos of handwritten shopping lists into digital form, then finds deals across all local stores for the terms on the list (with an end-to-end turnaround time of minutes) - a system which processed uploaded photos of user receipts from stores across North America and determined through an automated business logic engine whether or not the receipt was applicable for a rebate, including Flipp's first payment system integrationI also helped our team pioneer and contribute to boilerplates for use throughout the company for various languages, and helped solidify forward-thinking solutions to our company's wider technical challenges for the re-use of all of our developers.

Managed and mentored 12-15 direct reports at various times throughout this time period, both technically and professionally. I was also the main developer or primary consultant for many of Flipp's major back-end systems, including the primary tools used to productionize and serve flyers to millions of users. A lot of this work was in concurrent programming, image processing, algorithms, indexing and scraping, and data processing and pipelines.
