I support the coordination of projects in global HIV/AIDS for the International Laboratory Branch. We work on health systems strengthening efforts and increasing laboratory capacity in developing countries. We recently launched the African Society for Laboratory Medicine as a professional accrediting body, networking and standardizing laboratory infrastructure throughout the African continent.

I developed an immunoassay for the detection of Lethal Factor and Protective Antigen in Bacillus anthracis for use in diagnostics of clinical and environmental samples. Also, I was responsible for compiling a DHS panel of extracted DNA preparations of all 100+ strains of select agent organisms in the CDC repository; preps are used for further diagnostic assay development.

I worked as project manager for the Nocardia antimicrobial resistance project where I coordinated project design, logistics with state health departments, and data collection and management including working in a microbiology laboratory running drug susceptibility analyses. My concurrent research as a microbiologist led to the discovery of a new Nocardia species and two co-authored chapters for science texts; one on Actinomycetes and the other on Anthrax.
