Support the 34 mayors and cities that are members of the NC Metro Mayors Coalition, and in 2020 was also appointed as the Director of Urban Affairs for the NC League of Municipalities. Manage the day-to-day activities of the Metro Mayors, lead efforts to develop policy, build coalitions and advocate on behalf of urban issues and larger cities in North Carolina at the state and federal level. Special focus on transportation, public safety, economic development and public finance.

The Office of Federal Affairs advocates on behalf of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a leading research university ranked SIXTH in nation for federal research and $1 billion in overall research expenditures. Managed federal relations for a campus with 29,000 graduate and undergraduate students, 3,600 faculty and 8,400 staff. Served as Director of the Office of Federal Affairs and the registered federal lobbyist for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Office is charged with coordinating and expanding the university’s relationships with Congress and federal research funding agencies as well as strengthening the university’s contributions to national advisory panels. The Director works with university leadership, faculty, staff and students and community partners to maintain a high profile presence for UNC in Washington and serves as an advocate for federal issues and research priorities for the campus.

Managed a Congressional team with 8 professional staff members in the state offices - Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Durham and Fayetteville, North Carolina.Managed and coordinated all aspects of a Congressional home state operations, including strategic scheduling, constituent services, media relations, business and community outreach. Lead manager for intergovernmental relations in North Carolina. Served a as senior adviser to the Congressman and the Chief of Staff on all matters and often represented the Congressman in public settings and discussions.

Founding Executive Director for the urban advocacy organization formed by NC mayors, starting with 12 mayors. Grew the organization to 21 cities by collaboratively developing a member driven urban advocacy agenda that helped pass legislation and move the needle on urban issues in a fast growing and urbanizing state.The founding Executive Director served many roles, including a state and federal legislative lobbyist, meeting planner, communications and media director, policy analyst providing economic, environmental and transportation expertise. Grew the Coalition from the beginning into a well funded and sustainable organization that is now established as a part of the state's public policy tapestry. The position required an entrepreneurial attitude and a strategic understanding of complex relationships to build the organization from the ground up.

Senior Policy Advisor to NC Governor Jim Hunt, focused on issues related to to the environment, transportation, economic development and disaster recovery. Chaired the Governor's Sustainability and Green Government Initiative. Worked with all state agencies as well as the business community, environmental advocates, transportation industry, agriculture interests and local leaders. Also served as an advisor and facilitator for intergovernmental disaster recovery efforts following Hurricane Floyd's devastating floods in Eastern North Carolina in 1999.
