My job has focused on fixing programming issues with MQ on z/OS Mainframe. This has been an incredibly varied role, with no fixed issue being similar, due to the large complexity of MQ. This not only has evolved my coding ability but has additionally improved my problem solving, debugging and testing skills, as each fix needs to be completely documented to a stringent set of guidelines.I led the team in improving critical tooling work. Taking full responsibility in moving the critical tooling work to a new operating system (Windows to Ubuntu) within a time-critical timeframe. This involved being able to lead the team by communicating obstacles, working around the core role, and fixing critical issues within set timeframes. I have taken part in additional activities during my year at IBM. This included being one of the core organizers for two University Open Days, creating workshops and talks about IBM cloud offerings.Additionally, I have volunteered in educating children on programming in multiple day events such as Smarter Schools, helping children get an interest in programming.I was one of the lead makerspace guardians at IBM Hursley, helping to maintain as well as curate different events in the Hursley Maker-Space.My work in activities over the year has allowed me to achieve IBM Recognized Speaker, IBM Recognized Teacher/Educator, as well as nominated me for a Volunteer Hero award.
Founder
As part of the Sheffield Engineering Leadership Academy (SELA, We where given the challenge of maximising the use of the Observatory’s Mobile Urban Sensing vehicle, MOBIUS to promote our activities, engaging with policy-makers and the general public. This multi-part project involved multiple deliverables, working with the David and Jane Richards Family Foundation (DJRFF) and delivering an 8 hour educational module for a Big Data Course. During development, we quickly saw our idea had the potential to be integrated into the standard Key Stage 3 curriculum. To give the work package and accompanying resources a relatable identity, it was named ‘Urban Champions’.This programme comprised of lessons that introduce students to the importance of monitoring our environment and how data on climate and air quality is collected. The culmination of the programme will be students having the opportunity to carry out their own mini data-collection project, using the Observatory’s mobile sensor, MOBIUS. The hope of this programme is that students will be inspired to take an interest in their local environment, and understand more about how engineering can offer insights into major environmental and political issues.Additionally, part of the deliverable included creating a web tool for easy monitoring of climate and pollution around the Sheffield Area, in order for people to get a definitive idea into the air quality of they're local area.
