About Ben Avery

A founding member of Grant Thornton’s Digital Audit Team, I use mathematics to transform the way that we provide assurance over the accuracy of a company's financial statements.As a sort of 'mathematician in residence', my role includes anything from adding mathematical rigour and research to our machine learning tools through to writing data-crunching algorithms which solve the combinatorically intractable 'unbatching' problem in accounting records.Prior to my current role, I studied Mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge University before training to be a chartered accountant at Grant Thornton UK LLP. I am also currently studying towards a masters degree in Machine Learning and Data Science at Imperial College London.

2023: Designed and built a replacement for the statistical distribution that has underpinned audit sampling around the world since the 1980s, which is both more efficient and more accurate. Studying towards a 2-year masters degree in Machine Learning and Data Science at Imperial College London, producing a number of tools such as the Payroll Tax Threshold Extractor and the automated ISA cross-reference tool.2022: Wrote a suite of API-enabled Open Banking apps for our new cloud-based appstore. Supervised colleagues across a number of different projects and led the hiring process for new Innovation employees. Was a guest on an industry panel event on the future of audit and technology.2021: Part of the founding group of the Digital Audit Team, running the initial vision and roadmap setting days. Researched and piloted Open Banking in audit, before rolling it out firmwide. Wrote some of the early apps in our Audit Analytics Appstore, including the FX converter, the first versions of the contra net-off tool and a public sector audit tool which recreates the primary financial statements and highlights any discreprencies with the client's draft accounts.

My work involved practice-wide innovation including algorithms to disaggregate batched general ledger transactions into their constituent accounting entries, or exploring technologies such as Open Banking. I also completed client-specific projects such as building an analytic to trace the complex paths of revenue transactions through some of our largest retail clients.
