About Ben Lachman

I am young natural resources professional with a diversity of experience in technical roles. I graduated Grand Valley State University in 2018 with a B.S. in Natural Resources Management and a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems and Technology. Through my education I gained experience in soil sampling, water sampling and testing, vegetation sampling, data interpretation, technical writing, cartography, LIDAR, GIS, and more. Upon graduation, I entered the seasonal work force of the federal government (United States Forest Service primarily) and explored the opportunities that the western United States held. I was drawn to the world of wildland fire and pursued every position that increased my qualifications and experience. I am most proud of my time spent on Santa Fe, Hotshots; a Type 1 Interagency Hotshot Crew that was used as a national resource for longterm fire suppression on the largest and most complex fires in the country. The world of wildland fire is exhausting and full of burnout. Work schedules consisted on 16 hour days, for 15 days on the fire, while sleeping in a tent. On top of that crews spend up to three days on either side of the work assignment traveling. I am driven, self-motivated, challenge seeking individual because of it, and my ability to communicate effectively in all situations is sharp. After pursuing a seasonal work life, I knew I had to identify a sustainable career. I moved back to Michigan for its stately resources and old local connections. I am now heavily motivated to land an entry level position as an environmental consultant, field geologist, ecologist, or hydrologist. I'm motivated by the opportunity to continue to protect our communities and natural resources and grow and learn with an ethical company with high standards of operation.
