About Ben Doherty
I’m a combination designer, developer, product manager. I enjoy working with genius people and making the conditions for them to flourish. I’ve made internal products that help architects for a decade, and published academic papers along the way. Right now I make a magazine, but I really miss working with other humans.I like asking questions and getting excited about the way the answers let me look at the world in unusual ways. I care about making sure that people are heard, and their perspectives are included. I’ve often worked to improve innovation in the whole company, to give people a sense that things are always possible, not that it is all too hard; doing a tech role in a non-tech company is as much about changing mindsets as it is making products.I can explore and solve problems on a whiteboard, in python, by making web prototypes, or making illustrations or stories. But most importantly, I can solve problems by getting the most out of a team of people who are more specifically talented than me.
Listed skills include Design Research, Grasshopper, Python, 3D Visualization, and 18 others.

Ben Doherty work experience

Course Coordinator
CurrentCourse convener/lecturer. A python course for designers, artists and all other non-mathematical people. It teaches Concepts, Competency and Culture of programming, so not just for loops, but also what GOTO Considered Harmful means, and how to work collaboratively using GitHub.I took on the design and delivery of this course because I think it has the greatest influence over the students’ careers. It’s run for 4 years now, so the first cohort are using the skills in practice, and several have been in touch to tell me how useful it has been, both in their degree and in real life.
Founder
Walden Pond is a magazine where you're the editor. It's a way to manage the distractions of reading web content on screen, by printing it into a physical book.I'm the everything at Walden Pond, I do the design, the software development and the customer support. It's been growing steadily over the last year.
R&D Leader
Working on building occupancy analysis and behavioural change. We made products, wrote academic papers and drove business-process improvements. I was also responsible for finding tech talent, managing the relationships with the internal stakeholders, setting the team’s direction, and mentoring.
Product Manager And Innovation Lead
Product Manager: Creating internal products to help the company become more data driven. These range from small prototypes to full featured, open source, software products. The small ones are patched together out of Google products and enthusiasm, designed to test if a need really exists. The biggest is a system to capture all the data possible about people and projects. We're constantly running small research projects to see if new directions are worth following.Innovation Lead: Constantly agitate the status quo. I do a lot of writing on the internal blog to introduce new ideas. I'm also a member of 'the commons', a board that is responsible for introducing ideas that are too big to think about during business as usual.
Computational Designer
First full time computational design hire at BVN. I worked on projects, trained people. I was also an advocate for computational design both inside the studio and in Australia more broadly through the compDesGrp meetup.
Tutor
Tutoring/supervising the final research project for the Architectural Computing undergraduates.
Design Studio Tutor
Running a design studio. Using the scenario of a post apocalyptic Australia, these studios looked at self sufficient communities as systems. What could be made internally and what needed to be traded? How many people can a given space support? Those sorts of questions.
Software Designer
We were designing a new piece of software, Design Script, that was for architects to capture their design intent. It allowed them to change things about designs and see the implications through standard constraint solving and through simulation.I was a domain expert and advocate for what users wanted. I also worked on the HCI and user experience aspects (see the patent below).
Technical Minion
Parametric modelling, Environmental analysis of buildings, training others to do these things.
