Recruited and then manager a team of six media and public communications assistants. Developed and then implemented annual work programmes covering media relations, networking with European Commission and Member States on EU-wide communication campaigns, production of written and audiovisual media content, testing of key materials in focus groups, public outreach activities, media monitoring and evaluation

Arrived at the start of the media frenzy about the arrival of H5N1 “bird flu” in Europe and started up this newly established EU agency’s media relations programme. In parallel I was asked to start up the Centre’s publications programme, develop its visual identity, write speeches for the Director and the Chairman of the Board and provide advice to the European Commission and EU Member States on the communication aspects of pandemic influenza preparedness.

My initial responsibilities were drafting press materials and supporting the Spokesperson of the European Commissioner in developing a media forward plan. I later worked with my Head of Unit to develop a communication strategy for the Directorate-General and design a set of "calls for tender" to secure contractors to support the strategy. I also worked with the Commission's in house audio-visual team to develop B-roll packages to support uptake of our stories by TV networks, and with the Director of Resources on drafting the Directorate-General's annual activity report.
