My work within the Coastal Research Unit was initially on the NERC project Coastal Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (CBESS), looking at relationships between biodiveristy and the coastal protection service provided by salt marshes and foreshores. Subsequently I have been involved with the EU project Foreshore Assessment using Space Technology (EU-FAST), developing a Copernicus downstream service that exploits the capabilities of the Sentinel satellites to model and predict wave attenuation by vegetated foreshores and provide an interactive tool allowing engineers and managers to integrate quantitative data on coastal protection functions of vegetation within their hybrid or nature-based management strategies. I am currently working on a NERC-funded project looking at controls on the resistance of coastal sediments to erosion (RESIST-UK - 'Response of Ecologically-mediated Shallow Intertidal Shores and their Transitions to extreme hydrodynamic forcing in UK settings'). The project aims to understand biological controls on landform stability and upscale these using drone and satellite data, feeding into the British Geological Survey's Coastal Vulnerability Index.

Cambridge Coastal Research Unit

My research focuses on the assessment and prediction of salt marsh morphodynamics at the decadal scale. I integrate field and remotely-sensed datasets with physically-based model outputs to produce location-specifc vulnerability indices and probabilistic predictions of morphological changes with the intention of producing a GIS-based tool to assist site and regional managers with robust decision making.
