This internship was spent managing habitat and food sources for waterfowl and other migratory game birds. Some manual labor was conducted to maintain levees and dykes for the ponds on the 3000 acre ranch, as well as expanding and making new ponds using heavy machinery. Conversely, moist soil management was done throughout the summer. This meaning testing soils and making observations of the ponds and their seed banks to determine if the pond has enough “duck food” (being wetland plants that ducks eat), or if the pond needed to be sprayed and replanted with another crop that we deemed to be most productive in the pond and area of the ranch. Along with managing wetlands I also joined on a banding project where we banded birds that when they are hunted the hunters can report the band numbers, which gives helpful data to the national database on population size and health.
