I volunteered with City Lights for nine years until I was hired in 2023. As a volunteer, I worked with others to provide a comforting place for people experiencing homelessness to receive clothes, food, books, haircuts, hygiene items, and a sense of community.After I was hired, I sorted donations, picked up weekly orders, and worked with guests. I helped clients with finding clothing, hygiene, and food items. I also helped clients work toward getting identification and housing. On Thursday Nights I led a group of volunteers in a station that helped children living in low-income households.In 2022 and 2023 I attended Cadet Lawman Academy which was run by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. The academy provided me with a unique experience that allowed me to learn valuable skills, such as firearm safety and emergency response procedures. I appreciated the camaraderie and sense of community among my fellow cadets, which made the training sessions both fun and rewarding. The academy also helped me build confidence in myself and my abilities, as I was challenged to step outside my comfort zone and tackle new challenges. Finally, I enjoyed the sense of pride that came with being part of an organization that is dedicated to upholding the law and protecting the community, and I felt that the skills I learned at the academy have served me well in my endeavors. As a junior staff member, I helped facilitate and help the new cadets have an experience that was as meaningful as mine.
