About Ben Whyte

I am currently working for the MBA as their research facilities and aquarium Engineer. I am also a freelance commercial diver with DiverLive. My role at the MBA forms part of the Site Services team. Within this role I am responsible for the seawater pumping operations, which feed all research/aquarium tanks at the MBA. I am also responsible for general site/seawater system maintenance and engineering as & where required & needed. Previous to this role I was working for the Ocean Conservation Trust on their Blue Meadows project. This involved growing seagrass (Zostera marina) from seed to juvenile plant in their purpose built seagrass nursery facility. Upon joining the team, my role primarily focused on the improvement & complete overhaul of their seawater pumping operation and seawater system at the polytunnel facility. I designed, installed and commissioned a series of sand filter filtration units. In conjunction with the sand filters, I installed swimming pool style self priming pumps to improve water flowrate. I also made alterations to pipework and inlets. During this role I created and published a Polytunnel Handbook guide/SOPs for new employees and volunteers. I also created monitoring methodology and data files for both plant growth, plant health, water quality and water parameters. I have hands-on aquaculture experience working with lumpfish, wrasse, and halibut (all from hatch right up until deployment size). My experience gained from working with these three species is vast, and ranges from egg/milt quality checks to calculating feed type / amounts, full details of skills and experience are provided on my CV.I enjoy practical working, and problem solving. I have experience in aquaculture engineering; building aquaculture flow through & RAS systems from scratch, re-engineering existing aquaculture systems for higher efficiency, and commissioning new aquaculture equipment such as filtration systems etc.I am a good listener, and believe in learning from those with more experience & knowledge than myself. In my spare time I am an avid land & underwater photographer, and love tinkering with cars - especially land rovers!Qualified HSE ProSCUBA commercial diver.
