After years of software development, I was ready for an adventure. So, I courageously or foolishly (I can't decide which) commenced the perilous adventure of obtaining a Master's degree in Computer Science.My adventure had me design a VM lab and host a BSides workshop in which I instructed attendees how to decrypt HTTPS traffic; it also had me give talks on cryptography and network security, serve as the vice president of my university's cybersecurity club, attend several cybersecurity conferences around the United States, compete in over a dozen cybersecurity competitions, publish a technical paper, work a second job as a graduate research assistant, take a full-time graduate course load, and earn straight A's during my busiest semester- completing all of this alongside my full-time job as a software developer in 1.5 short years.During the last two years while doing this, my coursework also had me write an MD5 hashing algorithm in raw C, write a python script to brute force field ciphers, use Beautiful Soup to mine data from Google and stock trading sites, reverse engineer program binaries in Ghidra, adapt and run machine learning algorithms, carve files with Binwalk and Autopsy, brute forcing web directories, run Metasploit attacks, spoof cookies, perform script injection, research targets with OSI, crack passwords and ciphers, and much more.But cybersecurity was just part of a much broader degree in Computer Science. My adventures with the university took my existing knowledge- gained over 4-5 years of professional work as a software developer- and perfected it. I've by now studied and/or worked with everything from Dev Ops and agile methodologies, cloud technologies, SaaS/PaaS/IaaS, Microsoft Azure, enterprise application architecture, PCI compliance, containerization, microservices, virtualization, and much more.I am proficient in 5 programming languages, along with moderate exposure to several others. I also have a B.S. in mathematics. And, as the lead full-stack developer on an application for 5 years, I've solved every problem thrown at me- everything from asynchronous task queues, API's, authentication, SSRS reporting, scheduled services, bash scripting, and more.The person who loves to learn will always be able to find joy. That's how I choose to live and work.
