Kia ora! I’m Benedict Sheehan, a penultimate BA/LLB student at the University of Auckland. Firstly, I am passionate about the law and its principles. Through my conjoint BA, which I completed last year majoring in History and Philosophy, I have gained a unique and innovative approach to legal issues that enhance my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. As the first person in my family to study law, I didn’t think I wanted to be a lawyer. However, after working with the Defence Legal Officers this past summer, I realised that law truly fulfils me. Law allows me to engage with practical philosophy critically and, at the same time, actually be helpful in an area many people find unclear. This past summer, as a Legal Intern for the New Zealand Defence Force, I gained many legal research and writing skills. I spent time researching, liaising with high-ranking officers on heavily varied work and assisting on high-stakes criminal cases. Last year, I thoroughly enjoyed my study of contract law, and this year, both Land, Equity and Company law have sparked immediate interest and passion in the realm of trusts and estates. To prove my work ethic, I have been actively involved in various organisations and succeeded with excellence in multiple areas. I was Co-President of the UoA Public Policy Club last year. I was awarded the Philip O'Carroll Philosophy Scholarship for academic excellence in philosophy. The Army has sharpened my pragmatic leadership skills and given me invaluable experience with teamwork, discipline, integrity, and communication. I intend to be a Reserve Legal Officer. Outside of work, I am highly social, and I spend my free time with friends, running or reading. I am proactive about reducing stress and keeping a work-life balance.
