Hello, my name is Benjamin Castro, I am a student at the University of Cincinnati, double majoring in Information Systems and Operations Management. Born and raised in Cleveland, OH, I had the privilege of attending St. Ignatius High School before moving to Cincinnati to continue my education.I have had the pleasure of working for several interesting companies doing a wide variety of tasks, from creating automation tools with Lubrizol to building chicken coops strong enough to fend off hungry mongooses in Hawaii. Along the way, I have developed my skills with tools such as SAP and PowerShell and deepened my understanding of project management through practical experience. A project of note that I have worked on was creating a program to automate the construction of virtual machines. I was part of a two-person team within the Hybrid Datacenters team at the Lubrizol Corporation. For backend code, we utilized the Hashicorp Packer tool to automate the creation of machine images. My primary role was designing the UI and the testing environment in PowerShell so the tool could easily be run from any team member's machine. By the end of my three-month term, we had a working program that could build a Virtual Machine in 7 minutes instead of the 1-2 hours it took to do it manually. Additionally, I learned a lot while in Hawaii about laying out and managing projects. I was alongside four other co-ops, and we were given several areas around the farm to tackle. We were rehabilitating the farm from about two years of severe neglect, and in Hawaii, that means many overgrowths. We worked in many different areas, from researching and developing a pruning strategy for the coffee trees to land reclamation and development, often battling nature at every step. You could imagine the environment posed unique challenges requiring creative solutions, making the whole experience memorable. Sap "Plan To Manufacture" Module Implementation, Co-OpThe Lubrizol Corporation May 2022 - Aug 2022Wickliffe, Ohio, United StatesAt Lubrizol, I was part of the Plant to Manufacture SAP team creating test automation scripts to be used after system updates. I used a software called Worksoft Certify, a codeless automation software, to capture and record processes in SAP. I worked to find the best practices, identify areas that need help from the tool's provider, and create scripts. I laid the groundwork for Lubrizol's Plan to Manufacture SAP team to continue creating and integrating these scripts into their post-update testing which will go a long way in time and cost saving once their integration is more widely implemented. -
Devops Engineer Co-OpThe Lubrizol Corporation Jan 2022 - May 2022Wickliffe, Ohio, United StatesAs a member of the HDC team at Lubrizol, I worked on a large project creating an automation program that built Virtual Machines. This program was written in Powershell and took my entire term to complete with one other coworker. This program now saves the team considerable time as it has reduced the time needed to build a VM down from an hour to around ten minutes. We began creating this program as a request from my manager to see how it may work. This was a new experience for both my coworker and me as neither of us had prior experience in any of the languages used. We began by creating an idea for the functionality we would like to have in our program and then divided our work. I began by creating the front end and the GUI for this project. I used PowerShell 7 to create a pop-up window when the script was run that contained all the necessary fields to create a VM. These fields (such as which data center, which host, and what to name the VM to name a few) would all be pulled directly from the company's VMware site so the data was always up to date. I created all the logic for the front end and ensured everything was self-correcting so that incorrect information couldn't be entered into fields and confuse the builder. This project required that I learn PowerShell along with other languages for some of the open-source tools we used such as HashiCorp Packer. -
Meat CloserCostco Wholesale Aug 2021 - Dec 2021Sharonville, Ohio, United StatesFollowing my time in Hawaii, I returned to Costco in the fall of 2021. During this time I was also taking a full-time course load of 16 credits. I would close every weeknight from 5:30-10:30 pm after my classes were completed for the day. My tasks mainly included stripping all the machines in the room apart, cleaning everything, and then putting everything back together before drying and setting racks and containers up for the next morning. This job was painfully tedious, but that allowed me to develop an incredibly efficient way of completing the cleaning. By the time I had left Costco, I was able to have the whole room cleaned in two hours by optimizing my process to eliminate the amount of downtime I had between steps and by reducing the distance I had to walk to complete each task. While I found the job monotonous I was able to feel proud and satisfied with how efficient I was able to make it. -
Operations Co-OpMalinowski Farms Llc Jun 2021 - Aug 2021Captain Cook, Hawaii, United StatesDuring this opportunity, I worked on a small family-owned coffee farm on the big island of Hawaii with three other co-ops. This whole experience was an exercise in critical thinking as we developed this farm. We were tasked with many projects such as building a chicken coop, land clearing, and fence construction; as well as simple upkeep and farmhand tasks. The farm was left untended for all of 2020 so there was a lot of upkeeping and refreshing to be done. Part of our tasks was to get a local arborist out to identify trees on the property we marked for clearing. We did this to help make way for new coffee tree saplings on part of the property. We also had to come up with our own natural fertilizer and mulch strategies since the farm is planning on earning its organic no-spray certification and the pandemic exacerbated issues getting the proper fertilizer to the island. To do so we would have to chop down banana trees across the property along with other trees, other plants, and occasionally boars from the compost pile. We would chip and combine large mulch piles in areas on the property that we let sit and decompose before spreading. Some of our other duties involved becoming registered for the local farmer's markets and developing a strategy for the market. We sold 100% Kona Coffee, fruits grown on the property, and flowers. Other maintenance tasks involved things like clearing boulders or large swaths of overgrowth, picking coffee, and repairing damaged facilities such as the drying shed and greenhouse. Overall this experience taught me a lot about being a small business owner and operator. I was able to learn a ton through practical experience as well as improve the way I problem solve and plan before a project with the unique challenges that Hawaii often poses.

Meat CutterCostco Wholesale Aug 2020 - May 2021Sharonville, Ohio, United StatesDuring my time at Costco, I worked as a meat cutter to pay for school. I had prior experience in the meat industry in high school. While at Costco I learned a lot about efficiency and skill mastery. I worked with a couple of seasoned meat cutters with over 50 years of experience between two of them. My day-to-day consisted of cutting beef and pork following the cut guide during the morning to keep the case full and by early afternoon I would begin piece cutting using my own judgment to keep the case as full as possible without overprocessing. I was also responsible for keeping other areas properly stocked like frozen seafood and ground beef. Part of my job was also maintaining my equipment like knives and aprons and keeping the large machines in order as well. -
Marketing Lead, InternFilter Queen May 2020 - Aug 2020Cleveland, Ohio, United StatesI worked as a marketing co-op during a large mail advertisement campaign at the beginning of the pandemic. Filter Queen is a company that makes home air filtration systems that can be placed in any room and run quietly, so they had become quite busy during the pandemic. I was put in charge of a team of two interns for that summer. We created thousands of mailing brochures and sent them out to doctors' offices, dentist offices, schools, gyms, and tons of other local businesses that require people to be in-person to visit. I would be tasked with creating excel spreadsheets of business and grouping them by area. I'd begin by collecting all of the necessary information to send them mail (Names, addresses, businesses), then my team and I would get a batch of brochures cut, folded, and sealed in envelopes. From then I'd make labels and mail them. The other part of my job was tracking what mail came back and why. Sometimes it would be that the business was no longer operating, or sometimes they would write back and say they aren't interested. With that information, I would update the spreadsheet so no mail would be sent to these organizations again. -
Fleet ManagerDrive Options Jul 2019 - Feb 2020Cleveland/Akron, Ohio AreaAt Drive Options, I was able to learn a lot by wearing many hats. The company provided a fleet of vehicles to its customers who could request vehicles in the app and I would deliver the vehicle at the time and place specified by the customer. Here I did a lot of vehicle maintenance like cleaning, vacuuming, detailing, and inspecting for larger issues like paint flaws and wheel scuffs. Additionally, I did deliveries and pick-ups of vehicles. Being part of a 4 person organization I was asked to do a lot outside of my normal job such as maintenance around the facility. I mounted TVs, set up desks, and moved walls as part of my other tasks around the office. I found this experience very engaging as I was always busy and I loved working so closely with cars and being part of a young company.
