As a student internship program funded by the Department of Energy, the Industrial Assessment Center employs interns to work as energy consultants to manufacturing plants and other industries across the region. This requires interpersonal skills of a professional degree, a significant range of engineering knowledge and adaptability suitable for working within a wide spectrum of industries, and the ability to effectively and efficiently work with a team of fellow consultants. Responsibilities include on-site information gathering and professional report writing, which frequently also require independent research and an exceptional ability to quickly learn. In addition to the aforementioned responsibilities, a Lead Student is required to be able to effectively manage a team of consultants, assemble and review their reports, and represent the center in a professional setting at the National Lead Student Conference. The purpose of the free energy consultation service that the IAC provides is to aid industries in reducing their carbon footprint while at the same time greatly reducing energy-related operating costs. On average, the provided assessments present savings of 12-15% on energy bills each year.

This position consists of the installation and removal of 20 to 60 meter anemometer towers across the state of Colorado at the request of private land or business owners. This free service provides one year's worth of reliable wind data which is used to determine the viability of wind power in that region. The position requires extensive traveling to remote locations, physical labor, interpersonal skills for interaction with the client, and the ability to work efficiently and safely in a potentially hazardous team operation.
