UB Biotech Investment Group (UB BIG) is a student organization at the University at Buffalo Jacob’s School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Members of UB BIG have the opportunity to manage a simulated stock portfolio consisting of small to mid-cap biotech companies. With the help of professionals from the biotech and finance industries, members will present, review, and discuss clinical data from prospective companies during monthly ‘pitches.’ At the end of each pitch, a vote will be held to decide which companies are added to our portfolio.

I initially served as a genotyping assistant, using PCR and gel electrophoresis to confirm the genotype's of experimentally used mice. Beginning in the fall of 2018 I started working on the functional validation of CRISPR targeted mutation sites in a gene called Runx2. Human fetal osteoblast (hFOB 1.19) cells were used and they were transfected with a cas9 expression system using a lentiviral vector. Confirmation of mutations required the use of PCR, gel electrophoresis, T7 endonuclease assay, pCR2.1 cloning into E. Coli, miniprep, and Sanger sequencing. The sequencing results confirmed the presence of mutations in each sample. I am currently working on performing western blot and qPCR to functionally validate these mutations on the level of mRNA transcription and protein expression.
