As a technician I have to adhere to Swansea University’s guidelines and policies, whilst maintaining a standard of health and safety and environmental quality both in teaching and research environments. Within my role, I assist across as variety of disciplines within chemical engineering, but with crossover into other faculties. I am required to attend requests punctually and professionally. This includes troubleshooting and repairs of analytical apparatus such as GC, FTIR, UV-Vis, MP-AES, IC, Fluorescence spectrometers, microscopes and analytical balances, amongst others. A thorough knowledge of running this equipment is, therefore, essential. Involvement in teaching sessions is paramount, requiring interaction with undergraduate students to convey wet chemistry and engineering techniques. Health and safety is pivotal within the laboratory, so my role extends to generating standard operating procedures, carrying out risk assessments and COSHH assessments, and having a strong understanding of occupational, chemical, gas and fire safety.

I worked as the company’s sole R&D chemist, managing projects and formulating products relating to tenders and customer requirements, with a necessity to meet with current and prospective clients. Within this role, I developed an aptitude for quality, environmental and health and safety, completing my NEBOSH General Certificate during my employment. I subsequently advised on industrial health and safety practices across two sites. I managed product regulatory compliance across a large number of products, requiring an in-depth and concurrent knowledge of cosmetic, biocidal, transport of dangerous goods, health and safety and chemical regulations.
