Director, Technology Parnerships
I led Lam's Technology Partnerships program within the Office of the CTO's Strategy and Innovation team. This role combined my passion for building with new technologies with finding connections between internal stakeholders and outside companies. I networked within Lam's several business units to understand mid-and long-term challenges; and then seek startup companies, small businesses, and large companies alike with whom we can co-develop novel solutions to advance the state of the art in the semiconductor industry. This role demanded the most of my passion for learning, as I engage partners in such varied technology spaces as novel materials and processing methods, machine learning algorithm development, metrology spanning features over nine order of magnitude of length, novel wafer processing technologies, and much more.
Senior Manager, Technology Partnerships
Vice President Of Technology
Ostendo Technologies is developing cutting edge display technologies based on solid state light emission. The Company's Quantum Photonic Imager (QPI®) is a novel micropixel display-on-a-chip that leverages Ostendo’s extensive semiconductor processing expertise to integrate GaN- and AlInGaAsP-based LED materials with CMOS-based control circuitry. The QPI platform enables myriad applications, including low-power embedded projectors, high-brightness wearable displays, and full-parallax, glasses-free three-dimensional projection.I led two of the Company divisions: the GaN Lab, and the Nanotechnology Lab (NTL). At the GaN Lab, I leveraged my doctoral research in hydride vapor phase epitaxy to guide our team as we advanced the state-of-the-art in thin- and thick-film growth of group III-nitride materials. With the Ostendo NTL, I built on my semiconductor processing experience in overseeing the company’s wafer-level processing of III-Vs and silicon as we develop QPI devices in the Company's R&D clean room in Carlsbad, CA. I worked closely with my management team to advance the company’s research and development priorities and provide devices to our systems team for integration in microdisplay demos. See the link below for an example of a 3D display built on chips my team produced.
Chief Executive Officer
Inlustra Technologies, Inc. was a startup company determined to commercialize bulk gallium nitride substrates grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy. In contrast to other commercial bulk GaN efforts, Inlustra leveraged my graduate student research to utilize non-polar and semi-polar growth orientations to yield novel substrates capable of enabling fabrication of extreme high brightness LEDs.As the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Inlustra, I led the company's fundraising efforts through two equity rounds and two convertible debt offerings, raising capital from angel investors and strategic investors in the US, Asia, and Europe. I further took responsibility for accounting, HR, and day-to-day management of staff and operations throughout the company's nearly eight years of operation. As the company's Chief Engineer, I designed two cutting-edge hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE)/chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactors for bulk growth of GaN. I personally designed and modeled virtually every machine component and subassembly using VectorWorks and/or SolidWorks CAD platforms, specified components through research and vendor interactions, and guided our team through machine fabrication. These growth systems ultimately yielded some of the largest area non-polar and semi-polar GaN crystals and substrates ever produced. The invaluable experience I gained by running Inlustra from the creation of its initial business plan through funding and operations spanned small business and tech startup management, investor relations, government contracting, sales and marketing, semiconductor process tool design, and technology research and development.
Postdoctoral Scholar
As a Postdoctoral Scholar in Prof. Shuji Nakamura's research group, I continued research on hydride vapor phase epitaxial growth of nonpolar gallium nitride that began during my graduate studies at UCSB. I further mentored graduate students and trained my successors in crystal growth and materials characterization. I also actively collaborated with the UC Regents' patent counsel for UCSB's solid state lighting-related portfolio, drafting and revising multiple patent applications related to my research and that of my collaborators, and provided technical feedback for office action responses.
Research Intern
During this internship, Dr. David Braunstein provided me with in-depth training in atomic force microscopy and magnetic force microscopy, principally as applied to failure analysis of IBM's GMR heads and hard disk platters that were produced at the San Jose Storage Systems Division plant. Besides developing substantial expertise in scanning probe microscopy, this experience provided the foundation for my extensive materials characterization background. I learned to critically review raw data and ensure it was free of misleading artifacts, which I apply to all characterization techniques that I've since mastered.
