About this business & why I started it: Started when I was 14, Auckland Motorways was established as a method for people to get information on projects from a source other than the government. I started it because I had wanted to create a website that would be an information point and would receive regular visits. I always had an interest in the transport projects going on in Auckland and felt that the government’s website was poor at explaining the projects clearly or even at all. The website received attention when I set up a page dedicated to the reconstruction of a controversial interchange redevelopment on the North Shore of Auckland. I was interviewed by the North Shore Times and also One News. The interest in the site exploded, and often my project pages would out-rank the official ones on Google. The ongoing development of the site required construction site visits, photography, illustration creation, content generation and social media management. The site was popular, controversial and most of all, informative for the public. My website was also the first non-official site in Auckland to display traffic-condition cameras. The traffic aspect of the website is still running and receives 16,000 people per day – which generates sizeable advertising revenue.

Founder & Managing Director

About this business & why I started it: When I was in High School I would always bring in things from the United States, perfume, clothes, cell-phones, laptops – things you couldn’t get here. So I formed a bit of a name for myself as the importer who can get you hard-to-find things. Perfume was always the popular one because of the gift element and people being attached to them. I had always had a desire to run an online business and thought that perfume was a great place to start because the product sold itself and had good margins on them. So, I began the business by building an ecommerce store from scratch and sought four-alternate supplier relationships out of the United States. In my first month of operation I achieved $10,000 in sales without any large advertising investment. My point of difference was to sell the most popular perfume at the time to generate buzz and high sales. Not only did I sell it at a great price but I’d also make significant margin on the rare perfumes people were willing to spend the big bucks on. The other difference was I would auction the varied batches to the four suppliers, the ones who had all the stock and the best price got the deal. I never kept inventory, it was all on-order, so it was a lean operation with almost no overheads. In my first year I turned-over $150,000 in sales and began to grow at a fast enough rate that it attracted attention. I sold the business after 17 months of successful operation.Key achievements:- Monthly sales growth on average of 15%.- $150,000 in sales in my first year of business.- Successfully planning and implementing GST and customs-duty compliance switch once company reached tax-threshold.- Shifting to alternate suppliers two-months out of busiest season without any customers being affected.- Generating a profit in my first month of operation.- Sale of the business after only 17 months of operation.

Managing Director

Tridium Web Design

Role: founder, designer/developer and Managing Director.About this business & why I started it: As I had established my motorways website (mentioned below) I had learnt web-development myself and the profile that was built from it (newspaper articles, television interviews, general word of-mouth) created a name for myself as a web-designer for hire. People approached me to build websites for them from inception stage to maintenance and advertising thereafter. Initially it was people who I knew where the connection was, then I was being recommended for work from people I’d never heard of. This made me formalise the business and begin to start creating a name for myself as someone who understood the goals of the business and would design functional and beautiful websites. The work and my hands-on/collaborative attitude was what allowedme to keep gaining and maintaining my clients. I had created a brand of quality work that eventually sold-itself, and advertising I did was nowhere near as successful as being recommended by my clients. In this business I worked with artists, hospitality, PR firms, accountants, entrepreneurs, dairy-exporters, healthcare and food-service.Key achievements:- Developing NZ’s first online Carbon Credit business, developing their look and feel and being involved in the company launch and online strategy.- Developing a complex calculation algorithm, and employing extra staff in order to complete the project, for an Electricity Comparison Websites. I was also taken on as a partner for this business, and involved with the successful engagement with five NZ power companies as collaborators.
