Responsible for conducting transaction privilege and use tax compliance audits. The audit process begins by the auditor conducting independent investigation of taxpayers to identify non-compliance with the TPT and Use tax laws utilizing multiple internal and external sources to identify potential audit leads. The auditor may also be assigned randomly selected audits. Once a taxpayer is identified for audit the auditor is responsible for researching the nature and extent of the business’ activities to determine the specific tax laws that are applicable; the auditor conducts multiple interviews of the taxpayer and their key employees at this stage, The information learned through the independent investigations and interviews guides the auditor in their determination of the nature and extent of audit evidence gathered. As an auditor I am responsible for analyzing the evidence in light of State and municipal laws, national court decisions and case law, as well as the Department’s Administrative Code and use their own discretion and judgment to draw conclusions in determining the final audit verdict. The auditor prepares a file for the Department’s legal department to be entered into court as the audit evidence. The legal file includes an audit report that provide a narrative of the nature of the business and the citations statues, case law, and administrative code that constitute the legal basis for the audit verdict and exhibits of evidence gathered and used. The auditor is responsible for adhering to federal and state laws that govern their conduct, taxpayer rights, and the Department’s internal policies and procedures for gathering and properly documenting audit evidence.
