Mechanical Engineer Intern

Developed, constructed, obtained Electrical Safety Officer approval to use the device at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and experimented with an electrically safe Xenon Flash unit to obtain high speed imaging of rod impacts into high explosive targets I work in the Detonation Shock Physics group. I have been the lead experimenter on several gas gun driven experiments, which were studying the shock compression of Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene and High-Density Polyethylene. In the experiments a multi-wave structure was observed, which is indicative of a phase change happening. I also have worked with machinists to design and fabricate parts for targets and experimental diagnostics. A machinist and I created a flash mounting system to capture high speed video of Composition B explosive. I developed a way to use a typical camera flash ring to flash when the projectile hits the Composition B explosive to provide the light for the camera to take the video.I have participated in the 2013, 2014, and 2015 Student Symposium, and have created three posters. They include “Electromagnetic Multiple Shock Tracker Gauges,” “Shock Characteristics of Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene and High-Density Polyethylene,” and “The Shock Sensitivities of Nitromethane/Methanol Mixtures.”Developed a Xenon Flash System that was electrically approved for use at Los Alamos National Laboratory
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Representative
Liaison between department faculty and undergraduate students. I communicate internship information, job opportunities, and events to students. I also answer undergraduate student questions and assist them with their problems. I attend the faculty meetings to voice the concerns of the undergraduate students.
Design Clinic Assistant
I serve as liaison between the students and the design clinic faculty. I help organize the design conference and the printing of posters for the final presentations. In the Mechanical Engineering Design, there are over 130 students and 22 design teams. I supervise the Stratasys 3D printer and help the students print parts needed for their design projects.
Research Assistant
The project was to design and calculate the cut and fill for a 100 mile railroad feasibility study that the Navajo Nation wants for transporting coal and other goods.I acquired the digital elevation models and the topographical maps needed for the study and used those in Autocad Civil 3D to design the railroad and calculate the cut and fill from Thoreau, New Mexico to Farmington, New Mexico.
