Served as the Special Projects Manager and Traffic Operations Specialist, responsible for supervising, monitoring, distributing, and managing the workload of 7 Assistant Traffic Analysts. This required identifying the skillsets of each analyst and delegating tasks appropriately, then monitoring progress. Under his guidance, this team developed comprehensive response plans for major adverse weather events, large special events, and major construction projects as well as DMS messaging plans for routine roadwork or small special events. Ben’s team also produced monthly reports, ad-hoc reports during major weather events such as Hurricanes and Winter Weather, administered contract towing activities, and supported ITS device placement used for incident management activities. Additional responsibilities included participating in high level planning and design meetings, creation and updates of NCDOT Traffic Management & Toll Operations SOPs, creation and implementation of all STOC training, identification of future projects which may benefit from TSMO strategies, generating ArcMap based products of locations for existing, temporary, and new permanent ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) devices, creating broad scope detour/response plans including signal timing, ramp meters, dynamic trailblazers, variable message signs, then training DOT and embedded consultant staff on how to use response plans for Integrated Corridor Management Systems. Successful high-level designs for ICM Systems on I-95, I-26, I-40 Business, and I-40 were created by Ben and his team to manage traffic volume, congestion, and incident clearance times during major construction projects.

As an Assistant Traffic Operations Specialist, he supported major roadway construction projects with implementing new traffic management strategies. He served as the liaison between the control room and construction personnel, participated in weekly construction meetings, and oversaw the deployment of temporary ITS devices to support work-zone activities. Ben monitored smart work zone systems, reviewed MHT/MOT plans and identified detour routes, and created signage plans for DMS/CMS. He was involved with creating comprehensive interactive maps that are used by project staff for tracking and logging work zone incidents and developing reports to identify locations for spot safety improvements. Retrieving data on traffic volumes, peak travel periods, and known problem areas then creating or assisting with response plans for major holidays, special events, and major weather events such as hurricanes and winter storms. During emergency operations Ben was the POC for programming two-way radios that were distributed to maintenance units in areas that were projected to be affected as well as a critical mission route creator in support of NC Emergency Management for supply loads headed into areas affected by hurricanes. Ben also assisted with initial implementation, monitoring, and adjustment of ramp metering systems on the I-540 corridor in the Raleigh area.

As a supervisor, Ben was responsible for helping fellow operators succeed by being a knowledgeable reference point on almost any issue encountered in the TOC. His duties also included supervising shifts, overseeing personnel management duties, and compiling shift reports. He created and maintained maps used as tools by operators, assisted with training, developed standard operating procedures, and compiled data for monthly congestion reports

As a Traffic Operator, Ben was responsible for monitoring roadways across the state of North Carolina for incidents which would impact travel. This is accomplished through monitoring a mix of Closed-Circuit Television cameras, law enforcement CAD feeds and radio traffic. Upon incident verification, he would enter incidents into the Traveler Information Management System, dispatch Incident Management Assistance Patrol trucks, and activate overhead Dynamic Messaging Signs. He was also responsible for notifying NCDOT crews of any incidents which require their action, logging actions, and preparing a shift report

I troubleshoot and diagnose issues with Kodak retail equipment such as picture kiosks, Apex drylabs, thermal printers, scanners, and software issues. I use a combination of over the phone troubleshooting and remote diagnosis by way of Citrix systems.
