Modelling, Simulation & Analysis Engineer
Phd Candidate
As part of this role, I undertook a comprehensive literature review of existing wave energy modelling techniques and control systems, and then developed models of varying fidelity, suitable for different conditions. A computational fluid dynamics simulation was developed in OpenFOAM and validated using experimental data. It was found that an optimal control system for a wave energy device required future knowledge of the conditions. To circumvent this issue, a nonlinear passive control system was proposed and tested within the high-fidelity simulation to enhance the efficacy of the wave energy system. This role required modelling of magnetic forces from first principles, varying fidelity models of fluid-structure interaction, and substantial data analytics and signal processing.
Tutor In Automatic Control Ii
This role involved collaborating with other tutors to facilitate computer workshop helping 3rd year undergraduates develop an understanding around the principles of Automatic Control, MATLAB, and Simulink. The course underwent a restructure in 2018 and moved from a purely MATLAB environment to a physical system with which the students could develop a control system in Simulink with hardware-in-the-loop design methods. This role advanced technical and troubleshooting skills and hardware interface capability. Additionally, during the COVID 2019 pandemic, a rapid shift to online teaching was required. This entailed developing physically representative systems within a Simscape Multibody environment, upon which the students could seamlessly apply their control systems. This effort was recognised with a Teaching Excellence Award for the team.
Tutor
In addition to the roles outlined above, I was also involved in a number of other tutoring roles for Advanced PID Control, Programming (MATLAB and C), and Automatic Control I. I was involved in a variety of capacities including head Tutor, creating course content, assessments, and facilitating workshops.
Tutor In Dynamics
The role entailed collaborating with a team of tutors to ensure a high level of teaching capability of a large cohort of 1st year students in Dynamics. This included leading classes of 20-30 students through difficult dynamics problems and fostering an environment of shared learning. Tutoring this subject required a thorough understanding of the subject material and a high level of communication skills. Flexible teaching styles were essential to assist different people’s learn style and rapid shift to online learning due to the pandemic. The clear explanations were consistently appreciated by the students. Furthermore, this role included moderation of several exams.
Co-Supervisor
As part of my honours project, undertaken in 2016, my group was approached by sponsors from the company Availer, looking to commercialise innovative technologies. I have been working closely with them to date in the formation of the company RigShaper. The first phase involved developing the prototype software of a human body 3D scanner. Initially, my role was very technical in developing the project but I have moved to the position of Co-Supervisor of the 2017 honours group. This position has involved advising the honours group, collaboration efforts between the university and external companies.
Module Coordinator
Involved facilitating all aspects of the Dynamics course at Eynesbury College based on material provide by The University of Adelaide. This position was a rich opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of tertiary education coordination including assignments, exams, and personalised teaching strategies.
Lecturer
This position involved preparing and delivering lectures on Advanced Control approaches. The course was a 2-week intensive for students from AnDe College as part of a joint initiative with UniSA. The critical successful aspect of this role was the ability to reduce complex control problems to intuitive and clear descriptions for students with English as a second language.
Innovation Manager
This position was an effort to commercialise my honours project from 2016. This involved developing the project to a prototype state, meeting with potential sponsors, co-supervising a group of engineering honours students in expanding the project, consulting industry experts, and facilitating project progression through supervision of employees and interns, as well as engaging with relevant stakeholders. The technology was using commercial depth scanners to generate 3D points clouds of the human body for on demand biometric and health related measurements.
Engineering Student
Assessment of maintenance strategies, structural integrity corrosion assessment, recording usage data, reviewed and completed a preventative maintenance strategy report, analysedand sought quotes for train carriage recoupler springs and performed a stress analysis on a cantilever setup for lifting.
Research Student
Shaped and tested bone specimens for mechanical testing. Then processed the data to calculate variousmaterial properties.
Engineering Student
Constructed piping and instrumentational diagrams of the steam distribution system in Mulgrave SugarMill. Searched and processed data in records to validate that particular imposed environmentalrequirements of water flow were satisfied.
Engineering Student
Created a working dynamic simulation model of the Proserpine Sugar Mill steam distribution system tohelp understand significant undesirable pressure drops. Searched and processeddata in records identifying the cause of pressure drops and peaks. The constructed model wasused to determine how the system would react to various possible solutions
