Responsible for the digital product environments, roadmap and performance for all News Limited sports properties nationally in Australia including Fox Sports Australia, The Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun, Courier Mail, Advertiser Now and Perth Now.Combined with the Group Sports Editor to plan a new structure and the execution of a new strategy that drove the News Limited network to No1 in Australia.I started in this role as the Director, Digital of Fox Sports and a member of the executive team, before being promoted to manage News Limited properties across Australia.For Fox Sports specifically I was responsible for all elements of the Fox Sports Australia digital business including P&L management, setting the strategy and editorial voice, development of all digital products on all platforms, and commercialisation of these products.I restructured the Fox Sports suite of digital products and embedded a mobile and social product focus that returned the Fox Sports website to a top two contender in the market from a position of no6. In tandem with editorial and marketing colleagues, I reset the editorial strategy and cross-platform alignment, and established a new digital marketing division with a renewed focus on digital and social.
Responsible for setting and driving the foundation digital strategy for Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA), a leading Australian Telecommunications provider. VHA is a world-first merged business between global communications leader Vodafone and international business leader Hutchison Whampoa's 3 Mobile. As the foundation General Manager for the newly established business, I built a large team with diverse functions including Innovation, Publishing, Digital Activation, Creative and Experience Architecture. This included responsibility for VHA's online sales and service experiences, social media strategy and execution, and search and analytics implementations.Achievements included re-platforming of two branded digital environments incorporating 10 content management systems into a single new environment; driving strong digital growth in transactions and traffic; establishing a market leading social media team and function; driving strong social growth; adapting social channels to a significant business crisis; first mover status in the Telco industry in launching a customer forum to strengthen the digital connection to customers.I started in the role of Head of Editorial and Publishing at Hutchison Whampoa but was promoted to General Manager through the business merger. As the Head of E&P I led a team that delivered a mobile environment to a large base of Hutchison customers providing diverse content including news, sport, games and music. This involved publishing a site across multiple handsets and devices that was larger and more trafficked than some of Australia's leading online news environments.
Relaunched and revitalised the iconic Wide World of Sports brand and digital properties in partnership with Channel Nine, taking the website from a distant No5 in the online sports market to a No1 contender within 12 months. During this period I identified and developed areas of strength across ninemsn and Wide World of Sports, such as a focus on video and use of social entry points, and this included driving the online content component of a successful, ground-breaking cross-platform sales initiative.Working with sales teams from both Channel Nine and ninemsn, we secured new content partners across television and our digital properties to broaden the targeted demographics.I started as Sports Editor in this role before a promotion after 10 months to the position of Executive Producer.
Responsible for the day to day coverage of the flagship round of rugby union for the readership of Australia's most prestigious newspaper. I wrote front page news through to regular match and team commentary, driving comprehensive coverage of rugby union for an informed audience.
Led a team that conceived, constructed and edited some of Australia's leading sports properties such as rugbyheaven.com.au and leaguehq.com.au. I also led teams as Fairfax group online editor that delivered large event coverage on the ground at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the 2004 Athens Olympics, and the 1999 and 2003 Rugby World Cups. I won a second Walkley Award in the online category as the Editor of Fairfax's Group Sydney Olympics coverage online. In this role I was established as one of Australia's first mainstream multimedia journalists when covering the 1999 Rugby World Cup in print, audio and as a video journalist, filing all media types over the eight weeks of the tournament from the United Kingdom and Ireland. I also diversified into live match calling as co-commentator for coverage of Super rugby and Wallabies matches, plus regular appearances on radio and television offering expert analysis.During this period as part of the digital team at the SMH we established smh.com.au as a market leader in digital sports coverage and a first mover on numerous digital initiatives.
