About Benoit Chabot
Dr. Benoit Chabot obtained his PhD in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University in 1986 under the supervision of Joan A. Steitz. He subsequently trained with Alan Bernstein at the Mount Sinai Hospital Research Institute in Toronto as a K.M. Hunter Research Fellow (NCIC). In 1988, he joined the Département de microbiologie in the Faculté de médecine of the Université de Sherbrooke where he was appointed Head of Department from 1999 to 2008. His research has been supported by the Medical Research Council of Canada, now the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the National Cancer Institute of Canada, among others. Dr. Chabot’s research focuses on the mechanisms of alternative RNA splicing and its relevance to a variety of biological processes including apoptosis, evolution, senescence and human diseases including cancer. From 2000 to 2005, Dr. Chabot has co-founded and was president of a small biotechnology company working on telomere function. Over the years, his research was used to mentor more than 40 young investigators whose scientific discoveries have been published in journals that include Genes & Development, Nature Genetics, EMBO Journal, Cell Report, PNAS and PLoS Biology. Dr. Chabot is on the editorial board of Molecular and Cellular Biology and has served on national and international scientific granting panels. From 2001 to 2015, Dr. Chabot was the Canada Research Chair in Functional Genomics, followed by the Pierre C. Fournier Chair in Functional Genomics (2015-2021). In 2007, he was elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy for Health Sciences. In 2013, he received the NRC Research Press Senior Investigator Award from the Canadian Societies for Biomolecular Sciences. From 2012 to 2015 and then from 2017 to 2021, he served as director of the Cancer Axis at the Clinical Research Centre of the CHUS. He has co-organized RNA Society meetings in 2001 and 2009, and was the lead organizer for the RNA Society meeting in Quebec City in 2014. Since 2015, he chairs the Meetings Committee for the RNA Society, and in 2023 he received the RNA Society Outstanding Service Award. As of spring 2024: h-index of 63 >14800 citations (Google Scholar);Ranked 1265 of international profiles with h-index >40 in Molecular Biology in 2023; Ranked 39 in Canada (Research.com)In the top 3 and 4% of scientists in the world based on h-index and citations, respectively (AD Scientific Index)
