About Ben Pascoe
Broadly my research interests lie in further understanding how bacteria sense and respond to stress. Bacteria have evolved to produce a host of secondary metabolites including antibiotics, antifungal and other secreted molecules to improve their competitiveness in any given environmental niche or infection. It is this interplay between bacteria or between bacteria and host that I find particularly fascinating. I'm experienced in molecular biology and microbiology techniques and hope to build upon my experience in transcriptomics and genomics to better understand how bacteria have evolved to survive and persist under stressful conditions.
Listed skills include Microbiology, Genomics, Pathogens, Molecular Biology, and 24 others.

Postdoctoral Researcher - Evolutionary Biology Of Pathogenic Bacteria
Our database of sequenced Campylobacter and Staphylococci isolates enables us to compare large amounts of isolate data to form evolutionary theories which can then be tested in our lab. My particular areas of interest include the ability of isolates to form biofilm, oxygen tolerance and the general stress response that equips certain isolates for increased.
Postdoctoral Researcher - Dormancy In Staphylococcus Aureus
We developed the first model for enriching and resuscitating dormant Staphylococcus aureus cells in order to investigate their role in chronic infection and improve the efficacy of antibiotic treatment. We are investigating the effect of resuscitation on enhancing killing with conventional antibiotics. Success would enable us to improve existing antibiotic.
Dphil - Zinc Uptake In Streptomyces Coelicolor
For my DPhil I studied the role of the zinc uptake regulator, Zur, in modulation of ribosome structure and function under stress conditions in Streptomyces coelicolor. Under conditions of zinc limitation S. coelicolor can replace several ribosomal proteins with paralogous versions of ribosomal proteins which differ in their potential to bind structural.
Research Assistant
Work involved purification of antibodies for use in medical diagnostic kits by affinity chromatography. Responsibilites included ensuring that sufficient quantity of product was available and that quality control standards were met. We were also encouraged to perform small research projects to develop and improve production methods.
