Charity providing coaching support to disadvantaged young people in Bath and North East Somerset

Responsible for developing the work of the YMCA in Bristol, with a vision to deliver support to vulnerable young people in a financially sustainable way (without relying on local authority and government revenue grants or contracts). We believe this approach gives us the opportunity to respond quickly to the needs of young people, without being at the mercy of changes in local or national policy.We run The Kitchen (www.thestationkitchen.co.uk), a social enterprise cafe offering training, work placements and employment to young people who have had a difficult start in life. We are based on the ground floor of The Station on Silver Street, Bristol.We have recently purchased a building in Bristol City Centre, and are in the process of fundraising for and developing emergency accommodation for young people who are at risk of becoming homeless. As with all our work, this will be financially sustainable, with the charitable accommodation funded by commercial backpacking accommodation in the same building. This approach allows us to provide accommodation without relying on the local authority or government.

My freelance work involves development of strategy for charities, third sector and public sector organisations particularly related to work with young people.

As Chair of Bristol YMCA I am leading the process of taking the charity from being an organisation that has failed over many years to one which will be a robust and financially sustainable organisation committed to serving the needs of young people in our city.The charity is exploring opportunities to develop social enterprises which provide opportunities for young people to be supported - in mind, body and spirit.

As part of the Senior Management Team, I am responsible for developing a strategic approach to fundraising, particularly looking at developing support for the core operation of the charity. Areas of work include:Fundraising from trusts and foundationsDeveloping and supporting community fundraising eventsCoordinating a communication strategy for the charityRaising the charities public profileBroadening our base of support in Bristol and further afield.

Acting as part of the senior management team at Young Bristol, I was responsible for managing a number of projects predominantly focused on supporting young people’s personal development through volunteering and informal accreditation opportunities.The role included:• Managing and securing a budget of £256,000 pa.• Managing a team of 9 members of staff (6 part time and 3 part time). Motivating and challenging the team. Providing one to one supervision for team members. Ensuring the team members have access to appropriate professional development opportunities.• Negotiating and managing funding contracts, including monitoring outputs and outcomes.• Building, maintaining and developing partnerships with other organisations to ensure the successful development and implementation of the projects.• Representing the organisation on strategic groups.• Developing and delivering training to organisations particularly around supporting volunteers.• Producing written and verbal reports for Trustees.• Developing publicity for the organisation including designing printed materials, writing and designing the Young Bristol annual report and managing the development of the YB website.• Working with the senior management team, Chief Executive and trustees on the development of a strategy for the organisations development.• Managing an open access city centre drop-in information centre for young people• Networking with other organisations locally and regionally.
