Dr. Berry S. Anderson, PhD, RN, is an Associate Professor in the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Nursing and the Veterans Affairs Nursing Academic Partnership (VANAP) Academic Program Director. He teaches in the undergraduate and graduate nursing program with a focus on mental health and evidence based practice. Dr. Anderson received his BSN from South Carolina State University and his PhD from the MUSC. His specialty areas are brain stimulation treatments for depression and active learning classroom design. Dr. Anderson’s nursing career began as a psychiatric nurse on an acute inpatient behavioral health unit. After several years, he transitioned to research and became the Nurse Manager for the MUSC Brain Stimulation Laboratory and Mood Disorders Program. He collaborated on more than 40 clinical research trials concerning transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), epidural prefrontal cortical stimulation (EpCS), and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and has authored or co-authored over 35 peer-reviewed articles. Dr. Anderson is a member of the American Psychiatric Nursing Association and MUSC Men in Nursing group. He was a Presidential Scholar at MUSC, a Janssen Scholar, and a recipient of the Ruth Chamberlin Award and Sharon Davis Memorial Award. Dr. Anderson uses active learning design in his courses to engage students in learning and promote retention and understanding in a fun environment.
