Building on my background in geoscience and communications to research community resilience to natural hazards.
Boulder, Colorado
We support scientists in measuring the surface of the Earth and how it changes over time, with diverse applications including understanding earthquakes, volcanos, glaciers, and hurricanes. As UNAVCO's only outreach specialist, I strategize to increase our reach and communicate our community's science to a broad audience. In addition to managing the production of outreach materials and means, I build collaborations among different groups within and outside of our organization and train scientists to improve their communication skills with evidence-based practices.
Boulder, Colorado
Work with multiple programs and projects within UNAVCO including the EarthScope Plate Boundary Observatory, Education and Outreach, and Data. Web content creation, education and outreach content management and creation, metadata organization, copy editing, technical writing, photography.
Planning and execution of GPS survey assistance to scientists. I used my own field and research experience to help design, manage, and execute the GPS component of geophysical field research in Antarctica, Alaska, Greenland, Italy, the Galapagos, Hawaii, California, Oregon, Nevada, and Ethiopia. What I loved: Meeting new people, being involved in different disciplines of science, and traveling to far-flung areas of the globe. What I learned: Fluent use of computer systems, command lines, and power tools, and the art of troubleshooting. There is always a Plan B, Plan C, and Plan D when Plan A doesn't happen, and Plan A is almost always guaranteed to go awry when working in remote, extreme environments.
Plymouth, Vermont
Seems random, but I wanted to switch things up, experience New England, learn about food, and work with teens. I worked at Tamarack Farm, a teen camp on a lake in a forest. We grew much of our own food, and one of my best moments was cutting off five heads of lettuce--snap!--from our garden to wash up for a dinner salad. Overall, though, my favorite aspect was connecting with the kids, including handing my camera off to them after explaining shutter speed and aperture. It was a joy to see what they came up with.
Boulder, Colorado
Co-produced three videos focusing on wildfires within Boulder County. Available at https://www.bouldercounty.org/disasters/wildfires/maps-and-videos/. I signed up for the internship because of my interest in natural hazards communication; Boulder County wanted videos about their historical wildfires. Just days before our first meeting, a wildfire consumed 169 structures not far outside Boulder. Most of our work went into documenting how the town of Gold Hill narrowly escaped being consumed by flames. What I learned: Video editing can be as fun and frustrating and satisfying as putting together a puzzle, and I can get lost in it for hours.
