Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Through the University of Washington Study Abroad program, I enrolled at the Kotebe Metropolitan University in Addis Ababa to study the unique challenges and techniques in maternal and pediatric healthcare used by Ethiopian healthcare providers and public health officials. In addition, I studied various public health disciplines, including epidemiology and implementation science. This experience enabled me to expand my knowledge of global health and the way it is practiced by local stakeholders.

Greeks Take Action is a student organization at the University of Washington focusing on bringing awareness to and decreasing sexual violence and toxic masculinity campus wide and a focus on the Greek System. As VP of Project Management, I planned both large and small-scale events. In multiple roles there, I secured funding and coordinated budgets, planned events attended by over six hundred people, and assisted in running monthly community meetings. I gained valuable experience with coordinating between multiple organizations to maximize available resources, as well as building programs for specific community needs.

I served as the Ritual Specialist for the Beta Pi chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma for the 2019 calendar year. As Ritual Specialist, I was responsible for educating my chapter about the history and ritual of KKG, from its creation in 1870 to present day. My duties in this role included planning initiation and events celebrating new members, Founder's Day celebrations, and maintaining order during weekly meetings and whole-chapter events.

The Bailey-Boushay House is a care facility run by Virginia Mason specializing in HIV/AIDS care. They provide long term inpatient care, daily outpatient care, as well as the first homeless shelter in the nation exclusively for HIV+ people. I provided clients with activities, meals, and company, as well as assisted with shelter set up and supported medical and administrative staff while maintaining a focus on invested, personalized care for each patient.

As a student volunteer for Planned Parenthood’s Whatcom County Teen Council program, I learned about effective methods to maintain physical and mental sexual health through prevention and treatment. I relayed that information to my peers through interactive presentations at high schools across the county, as well as through one-on-one interactions with individuals. In addition, myself and my team lobbied our representatives in Olympia to allow people greater reproductive autonomy via longer term access to birth control. I credit my current passion for reproductive health and justice to my education and experience gained through Teen Council.
