As the H2H Employment Coordinator I support career preparation activities, such as; building and editing resumes, performing effective job searches, interviewing and networking. Understanding the details of their service in the military, the types of jobs they did, leadership opportunities, training requirements, times of deployment, and civilian employment gives me an understanding of the best type of career/industry/culture for the military job seeker and how to translate this experience into language that a civilian employer can understand. I assist all service members in the State of Michigan - all Reserve Component service members, transitioning Active Duty, Spouses and Veterans from any branch of the service. In addition, I work with employers of all sizes in all industries; assisting with military hiring initiatives, referring job seekers, educating employer's staff on military skills and job equivalents. I have designed a "Military to Civilian Primer" that creates a level of awareness into the basic structure, mindset and pitfalls when trying to recruit military service members. This primer guides the employer, recruiter and hiring managers through a basic understanding of the Branches of the military, Occupations, Rank structure, Educational requirements to attain ranks and positions, Duration (length of time) and how it adds to specific skills and leadership qualities, Other areas to explore with the Service Member, and ultimately Meeting and interviewing guidelines that will make the most of the time spent in the interview.

Over the last several years I have specialized in working with military service members transitioning from their military career into a civilian career. I have logged hundreds of miles traveling to Career and Job Fairs, Transition Events, Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Events, Military Bases and other military only events providing employment and educational opportunities for military service members, past and present who are making that career transition. The face-to-face time that I have spent with thousands of military service members has given me an insight into the difficulties they encounter as they are preparing to leave the service. Career service members walk into a civilian job market with very little understanding of how to draft a resume, how to interact in an interview and how to translate their superb military skills and training into "civilian friendly" terms. They are often pointed in the direction of "canned" resume writing programs that turns their military experience into a small novelette, filled with military terminology, acronyms and jargon that confuses, frustrates and bewilders the civilian employer.Guard and Reserve coming back from deployment face other obstacles re-entering the work force; jobs change, co-workers change, companies change and the Guard/Reserve employee has changed. Service members who are Guard/Reserve face loss of jobs, underemployment and change of focus from what they did previously. I have developed a specialized skill set assisting service members with job specific resumes and practical interview coaching skills. Listening, asking the right questions, volunteering with ESGR, and reviewing hundred of resumes from a civilian "eye" has given me an advantage. I have been able to employ and work side-by-side, daily with service members; listening to them and taking advantage of the opportunity to learn and I have a full and diverse group of contacts around the country that are always willing to "teach" when I ask.
