    Team Leader, Eu Employment Strategy
Department For Business, Innovation And Skills Jul 2012 - Jan 2013
I am the leader of a team of five that is responsible for setting the UK’s employment law priorities at the European level and for delivering those priorities through active EU negotiations. I have ensured that our employment policies are consistent with UK strategic priorities in other relevant areas (e.g. free movement) and delivered a strategy for engaging potential European allies to maximise our chances of achieving UK priorities in negotiations. I have ensured that our employment policies are consistent with UK strategic priorities in other relevant areas (e.g. free movement) and delivered a strategy for engaging potential European allies to maximise our chances of achieving UK priorities in negotiations. I am also leading a large and politically high profile cross-Government project to review of the balance of power between the UK and the EU on social and employment policy. I am managing a “virtual” team of 10 across four Government Departments through effective project management, sensitive stakeholder engagement, and acute political awareness. My core stakeholders are: Ministers and officials across Government, Parliament, the European institutions and Ministers and officials from other Member States, trade unions, businesses and their representative organisations. In this role I was responsible for protecting UK interests regarding one of the most controversial and high profile European employment policies – the Working Time Directive. I managed one graduate and also undertook additional responsibilities outside my day role to provide strong leadership to the graduate development scheme by acting as a mentor. I managed one graduate and also undertook additional responsibilities outside my day role to provide strong leadership to the graduate development scheme by acting as a mentor. I ensured that there was no change in the EU law on working time rules during a particularly challenging time when the UK had an obligation under EU law not to interfere in negotiations between business and trade union representatives. This required forward looking project management, being able to spot upcoming opportunities, creative and innovative policy development, and careful monitoring of the public debate to provide advice to Ministers. My core stakeholders were: Ministers and officials across Government, Parliament, the European institutions and other Member States, trade unions, and businesses. Show less

    Assistant Director, Directors’ Pay Reporting
Department For Business, Innovation And Skills Feb 2012 - Jul 2012
I was head-hunted for a high-profile but short term project to deliver a consultation on changing the law regarding how companies report annually on directors’ pay. I had to work effectively with and marshal support from a wider team of four. I delivered a well-received consultation on a set of new regulations and a high quality public debate that included contributions from all sides of the argument. I had to work effectively with and marshal support from a wider team of four. I delivered a well-received consultation on a set of new regulations and a high quality public debate that included contributions from all sides of the argument. I did this through a combination of detailed research and analysis of the existing legislation and well-targeted stakeholder engagement. I quickly developed excellent relationships at a senior level to build buy-in to the consultation and gain policy insight. I was also responsible for the external communication of the policy including working with experts to engage the media. My core stakeholders were: Ministers and officials in BIS and HM Treasury, Parliament, company investors, businesses and their representative organisations, and social commentators such as the High Pay Commission. I was a founding member of a team set up to challenge every Government department to assess its policy against the priority Coalition goal of delivering economic growth. For the final three months of this role I was promoted to Deputy Director, responsible for a team of eight. This coincided with a departmental restructure and required me to resolve resourcing issues and rebuild team morale at the same time as delivering to tight timeframes. For the final three months of this role I was promoted to Deputy Director, responsible for a team of eight. This coincided with a departmental restructure and required me to resolve resourcing issues and rebuild team morale at the same time as delivering to tight timeframes. This was a complex and high profile, cross-Whitehall project and I had specific responsibility for ensuring that some of the most controversial policies (planning and healthcare) maximised the potential for economic growth. I set the strategy and ensured it was resourced, kept it on schedule and delivered an ambitious set of policy proposals to support economic growth. My core stakeholders were: senior Government Ministers, officials across Government, businesses and their representative organisations, commentators and opinion-formers. Show less
