Since becoming a newly qualified nurse, I have worked within Oncology. The ward I work on specialises in the administration of chemotherapy, as well as managing the side effects on on going cancer treatment. This includes managing and caring for acutely unwell patients, often when they are neutropenic and are therefore extremely susceptible to infection. A large number of the patients I care for are admitted with neutropenic sepsis and need close monitoring and rapid treatment, following the neutropenic sepsis protocols. In June 2015, I completed and passed the necessary work and assessments for chemotherapy administration, and I am now confidently and competently administrating chemotherapy to patients and managing any adverse incidents that may occur, for example, anaphylactic reaction or extravasations. Over the past year, I have increasingly been the nurse in charge of the ward. This role involves assisting my colleagues to help them manage their workload, being aware and involved in the care of acutely unwell patients, and administering chemotherapy. This role also involves working within the MDT to ensure that patients receive the care they require, and also to assist with organised and efficient admissions and discharges.
