I am Calums MummyWhen Calum was 11 years old, 4 staff held Calum face down on the floor in a "restraint" in his "special" school until he couldn't breathe, lost consciousness and urinated. Then, they picked my small disabled child up off the floor, strapped him down in a chair and stood over him with an egg timer as punishment. He was still in his urine soaked clothes. They did this to my son twice in 3 days. We have an expert witness report that states Calums injuries are normally only seen in restraint death. No one has ever been held accountable.I was devastated, and became extremely vocal. This led to me being contacted by more parents whose child had been treated in a similar way- all of the children had additional support needs and disabilities. For the last decade, I have passionately campaigned against the use of restraint & seclusion in schools caring for children with additional support needs and disabilities. In 2015 my petition was launched in The Scottish Parliament. http://www.parliament.scot/GettingInvolved/Petitions/PE01548In 2018 Scotland's Children's Commissioner launched a formal inquiry and published "No Safe Place" https://www.cypcs.org.uk/ufiles/No-Safe-Place.pdfIn 2019 I founded Positive & Active Behaviour Support Scotland (PABSS) SCI049511 and The Scottish Government agreed to Robust National Guidance after legal action by The Scottish EHRC .I extended my campaign to England, Wales and Ireland and I went to the House of Lords to launch my report with the CBF. I came from over 700 families who trusted me with their stories www.pabss.org/rrisc In 2023 Daniel Johnson MSP is consulting on a members bill for #CalumsLaw https://www.parliament.scot/bills-and-laws/proposals-for-bills/proposed-restraint-and-seclusion-prevention-in-schools-scotland-billPlease support a change in the law. I am not going away... this has to stop.Im also a proud trustee of Enable Scotland and The UK Restraint Reduction NetworkOutstanding Women of Scotland (Saltire Society 2019)

Author & CampaignerVolunteer Aug 2006 - PresentAngusI love to travel and to write. I have written a book, but these days, I spend my spare time campaigning for the rights of children with disabilities. I run a series of support groups for over 1000 families who have children with additional support needs and I often advocate for these families in schools at meetings, reviews etc. I have been doing lots of training in "Positive Behaviour Support" and recently completed The BILD (British Institute Of Learning Disabilities) PBS coaches programme. Everything I do is voluntary as I am also carer for my own son who has multiple and complex needs.
