Women'S OfficerThe University Of Nottingham Students' Union Sep 2014 - Apr 2015Nottingham, United KingdomMy term as Woman’s Officer at The University of Nottingham Students’ Union has furnished me with skills in administration, project management and engaging students, as well as experience of working and acting within an example of student union policy and values. My role was to represent the students in the Women's Network, those being students who suffer oppression as women (trans and intersex inclusive), and reflect their voices and needs in the campaigns and events I managed. This meant maintaining links with the network members both face to face at events and freshers' fayre and via email and Facebook. The most successful projects the committee ran throughout the year were the ‘Body Confidence Week’ and Tampon Tax campaigns. The purpose of the Body Confidence campaign was to provide a variety of events on a theme that would engage students and encourage them to participate. These events included talks by guest speakers designed to educate students on the body issues faced by several intersections of society, an exhibition of student art and popular activities such as yoga. The organisation of Body Confidence Week entailed much preparation and delegation of tasks throughout the committee, such as advertising on several media platforms with written, verbal and visual content, establishing relationships with university societies to increase the campaign’s range of events/audience and logistical organisation. The Tampon Tax campaign was a petition to the Students’ Union shop with Network backing whose purpose was to push the shop to drop the VAT on sanitary products in line with other Students’ Unions such as the University of East Anglia. The campaign was ultimately a success and I was invited to speak about it and what it meant to the Nottingham students I represented on Nottingham’s BBC Radio station, which gave me experience of acting as an ambassador of the Students’ Union.
