So many years ago that I can’t remember how many of them, my father and I were in the car on our way to grab a bite to eat when we got stopped by a train moving at a snails pace. In typical dad style, he uses this time to teach. My father has been a web designer since the beginning of the internet, (so beginning, in fact, that a now well-known company turned down his pitch for a website because they believed, “This internet thing isn’t going to be as big as everyone is saying.”). As we’re waiting for the train to finish whatever it is trains do, my father starts pointing at the billboards around us and on the other side of the tracks, asking me to tell him which billboards I like and why.After I finish (and give him a confusing look), he starts to dissect the layouts, colors, images, fonts and explain why some of them are effective marketing tools and why some are not.I was immediately fascinated.There’s a lot more to tell between the day my dad nerded out on some billboards while waiting for a train and where I am today, but now you know some of the why.
