At Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, we believe EVERYONE DESERVES TO EAT and that all communities can be food secure and healthy. Together with our partner network and community of collaborators and supporters, Second Harvest’s mission addresses both the immediate needs of families for food assistance and key drivers of food insecurity, including employment. Second Harvest is the primary source of food for a network of nearly 500 local food assistance programs (pantries, community kitchens, shelters, and meals programs for children and seniors) serving communities throughout 18 Northwest North Carolina counties. Second Harvest’s Providence Culinary Training program and associated social enterprises, including a full-service catering operation, offer extended training and resume-building opportunities. Every day, Second Harvest works to address the critical connections between hunger and health, with a focus on alleviating childhood hunger, providing impactful nutrition education, advocating for policies that strengthen families, and collaborating with healthcare partners, local farmers, and others to build locally relevant solutions to hunger and poverty. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC’s Hunger for Change capital campaign raised $14.2 million from January 2020 to December 2022, for our new headquarters facility in Whitaker Park.This 140,000 square foot facility will allow us to combine the storage and operations of three disconnected warehouses, multiple cold storage trailers, and a separate office building into a modern, centralized community hub to achieve permanent improvements that fulfill these campaign priorities:• Simplify and better manage a currently knotted and inefficient system of delivery and distribution. • Remove limitations to accepting additional resources and improve accessibility.• Increase refrigeration and freezer space so we can continue to provide more fresh produce and healthy foods to people whose hunger and hardships should not force them to compromise on nutrition and wellness.• Add new technologies such as a conveyor system and comprehensive real-time data collection to target assistance where the need is most urgent.• Build upon the success of our nationally recognized Providence Culinary Training and its social enterprises and then place more skilled workers in the food industry.• Welcome and engage more volunteers and efficiently integrate all administrative functions.http://www.hungerforchangenc.org/
